| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Reviving the name of a 1990's MTV alternative rock show, BUZZCUTS gathers 18 giant hits from the post-Nirvana modern rock landscape. While the focus here is mostly on edgy guitar rock, the compilation mixes it up quite well. The offerings range from the surf-reggae of 311 to the power pop of Everclear to the relentless nu-metal of Papa Roach to the post-grunge of Creed to the infectiously droning rock of Our Lady Peace. | | Released in 2008, this collection of post-grunge hits and glossy punk-pop anthems arrives a bit too early to provoke the kind of nostalgia that sustains most Razor & Tie compilations. The bulk of the material hails from the early 2000s, and only one song predates Hole's "Celebrity Skin" (which, given its 1998 release date, is one of the few tunes to elicit the intended "oh yeah, that song!" response). Buzzcuts does deserve points for being the only place (outside of modern rock radio, circa 2000) where one can hear Lit's "My Own Worst Enemy," Everclear's "I Will Buy You a New Life," and Stone Temple Pilots' "Sour Girl" within the same 30-minute block. ~ Andrew Leahey | | Released in 2008, this collection of post-grunge hits and glossy punk-pop anthems arrives a bit too early to provoke the kind of nostalgia that sustains most Razor & Tie compilations. There's always the chance that Buzzcuts will continue to be promoted over several years' worth of late-night TV commercials, and perhaps a small handful of fans in 2015 will feel like they've stumbled upon the post-grunge holy grail with this 18-track album. But given the inclusion of such unremarkable artists as Papa Roach, Crazy Town, and Hoobastank, it's doubtful that Buzzcuts will age particularly well -- even if it does deserve points for being the only place (outside of modern rock radio, circa 2000) where one can hear Lit's "My Own Worst Enemy," Everclear's "I Will Buy You a New Life," and Stone Temple Pilots' "Sour Girl" within the same 30-minute block. ~ Andrew Leahey | Producer: Michael Anderson; Dean Babin; Michael Anderson (Compilation); Dean Babin (Compilation) |
