Some people want to forget the past. Others want to change it. This DVD 2-Pack includes two modern science-fiction thrillers that have gained an abundance of critical and cultural acclaim: THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT and it's sequel, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT 2!

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT: THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT is a provocative thriller that represents an intriguing new direction for Ashton Kutcher and features a dynamic ensemble cast including Amy Smart, Ethan Suplee, Eric Stoltz, and more. Some people want to forget the past. Others want to change it. Ashton Kutcher (Just Married) stars as Evan Treborn, who ties his emotional scars in adulthood to the frequent blackouts he had as a child. As he begins to unravel intensely personal truths about his childhood circle of friends, Evan decides to risk everything in a bold attempt to change the past, hoping to save the people he loves even if it means destroying everything he knows.

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT 2: It's nonstop suspense and action in this powerful sequel to the mega-hit, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT. After a tragic accident claims the life of his girlfriend (Erica Durance, TV's Smallville), Nick (Eric Lively, American Pie) discovers that he has the paranormal power to change the past and save her. But when he keeps going back to alter other events, he soon realizes that his actions have dire consequences for the present...and their future.

"[1] An ambitious, thoughtful and challenging film with layers of serious ideas."  Bruce Kirkland, Jam! Movies
"[1] ...a wonderfully intelligent piece that ties all its fluffy cinematic bows properly..."  Emily Blunt, Blunt Review
"[1] Outlandish premise. Cleverly executed."  Victoria Alexander, FilmsInReview.com

Editor's Note

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT: Playing God has its consequences, which is the theme of the tricky time-travel shockfest THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT. J. Mackye Gruber and Eric Bress, who share writing and directing credits, make a splash with a gripping script that never fails to throw twists and loops into the plot. Both thematically and visually, the film is similar to the perfect commercial filmmaking in the team's script for FINAL DESTINATION II.

Here, Evan Trehorn (Ashton Kutcher) is a college student who has suffered from blackouts and memory loss since he was a child. Tormented by deeply repressed childhood memories, he has visions of his best friend and first love Kayleigh (Amy Smart) as a child (Irene Gorovaia) whose Dad (Eric Stoltz) is a child molester, and whose brother Tommy has a serious sadistic streak. In search of greater clarity, Evan pores over his journals and is physically transported back in time where he is still a young boy (John P. Amedori) and has the ability to change what happened. But soon he realizes that changing history has caused calamitous results elsewhere. A mesmerizing thriller with a dark underlying mystery, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT is delightfully chilling.

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT 2: This small-scale sequel to the 2004 feature film builds on the premise set by its predecessor, with characters able to leap back in time in order to change their personal histories. But as in the first film, such tinkering with history only leads to dire consequences in the present, causing further havoc for those afflicted with this unique ability.

Professional Reviews
ReelViews 8 of 10
[1] The ending is weak, and may be the result of the filmmakers writing themselves into a corner and not wanting to conclude things in a burst of nihilistic excess. Yet, even though it's a cheat, it retains a degree of resonance, primarily because it doesn't seek to sabotage the dark tone. In many ways, The Butterfly Effect is about regrets, and the closing sequences emphasize this. The film is engrossing enough to minimize such misgivings, however; few who enjoy unconventional pictures and see The Butterfly Effect will regret the experience. - James Berardinelli

Qwipster's Movie Reviews 6 of 10
[2] The original The Butterfly Effect was the brainchild of writer-directors Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber, who had previously written a sequel for another gimmicky series in Final Destination 2. There's more than that connection to link these two different series, as both feature sequels that are only tangentially related to the others, essentially remakes more so than continuations of previous storylines. The problem with a film like The Butterfly Effect 2 is that, unlike the gory, humorous Final Destination series, there really isn't much joy in the plot itself after understanding it the first time. - Vince Leo
