The vocals feature a peppy female chorus, while the musicians accompanying Hyman include clarinetist Phil Bodner, trombonists Dan Barrett and George Masso, trumpeter Randy Sandke, and banjo player Cynthia Sayer, among others. Hyman and Derek Smith engage in a delightful duet of "That Certain Feeling," the leader solos in a lively stride rendition of "Thou Swell." Since this music was created for a soundtrack and evidently only heard briefly in the film, the performances are fairly short, all under three minutes. Also included are vintage recordings from the '20s and '30s by Duke Ellington, Bix Beiderbecke, Al Jolson, and Red Nichols & His Five Pennies. ~ Ken Dryden | Engineer: Roy Yokelson |
