5 of 5 Works Better Than Expected- Great Price Thursday, December 06, 2007 Mark from Rye Brook, NY
The unit works as advertised. I purchased a similar item in the past and it kept disconnecting from my wireless network. This unit stays connected well and does a good job. Some things chop up a bit from time to time but that is to be expected with a wireless unit. A good purchase Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Wireless Media Player Thursday, October 18, 2007 A Customer from Texarkana, TX
This is an incredible product and servers just as good as my XBOX media player without the cost. Flawless video, easy to setup and very affordable what more can you ask for? I would highly recommend this model if you are in the market for a media player to serve up you pc video content!! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 A nice solution for the price Tuesday, September 25, 2007 Mike from Phila, PA
Overall very happy. With a minimum amount of fumbling around I was able to get it talking to my network. It plays pics and mp3 fine. the support for video could use a few more codecs, but anyone can complain about any device and codec support. I would like to see a little easier to use menu system and the alphabetic playing of files with out play-lists baffles me. Also a random shuffle feature would be nice. But for the price you can't complain and the latest firmware really speeds up the interface. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Overall Good for the Money Tuesday, August 14, 2007 James Miller from Utah
After reading other reviews, I decided I could live with the negative I heard (poor remote and navigation) to get the features I really wanted (DIVX playback, USB port) and I haven't been disappointed. It is far from flawless, but I am not a super picky person and I can deal with a few problems now and again. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Great Hardware, BAD Software Wednesday, July 25, 2007 Ben Sanders, MCSE from El Paso, TC
The software that comes with the system is taken from the ADS Tech Media-Link, but Buffalo's logos where imported into it. This sofware is NOT Vista compatable and there are no plans to release a VISTA version.
I however found Tversity which is free, works very well, so long as you run in WindowsXP compatibility mode, by right clicking the icon then properties, and the under the compatibility tab you'll find this setting. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Awesome! Monday, July 23, 2007 pkeedy from Beaumont, TX
So far, this is one of the best toys I have ever bought. It does everything except talk to my iMac. But, with the USB port, all I have to do is plug in the backup disk of my media files and everything is great! Picture quality is great, ease of use is a piece of cake, compatibility is nearly unlimited (H.264 is not supported) and the price is fantastic. I was about to spend $299 on an AppleTV but this is much better -- even for a Mac user. Was this review helpful?

It's not perfect, but for Buy.com's price it's a bargain! I use it primarily to watch downloaded anime. It doesn't always work for all video/audio formats nor with "containerized" formats (.mkv, .ogg, etc.) But you can find most fansub videos in a .AVI (Xvid/mp3) format which works ok. Other formats I convert if I want to watch them on the big screen. GOOD POINTS: Good 1080i up-conversion. Plays both standard DVD's and ISO formatted DVD's I burn with PC formatted audio and video. Wireless operation, while not perfect is ok with a fast wireless router close to the unit (saves burning a DVD!) BAD POINTS: Slow response of the remote with certain operations. Does not play all of the format combinations I would like (but then no player does!) Transitions between photo display is very annoying. SUMMARY: A satisfactory DVD/CD player with some unique wireless capabilities at a good price. It's probably near the end of its product life so there may not be many future firmware updates. But my guess is future players that give you all the features you are looking for will be so tied up with DRM protection that anything you want to watch you will have to pay for first. Same problems as the other customers. Some WMV( 7,8) files are not played at all, others are stuck after 45 seconds. System hangs very very often.
Most menu points are grayed out without reason, manual IP change is not possible. After 50 minutes on the phone the support tech gave it up and issued an RMA.
Doesnt work together with my Verizon Westell modem/router ,major problems with Windows Media Connect.DO NOT USE WMC, use the Buffalo Theater System CD if possible. Was this review helpful?

WAIT to buy a DivX player till you confirm that they will confirm firmware upgrades to support DivX 6 and the new DivX Media Format (which allows subtitles, menus, multiple audio streams i.e. DVD functionality).
My glass is half-empty today. So first, what I don't like in this player (had it for 4 months now):
- no codes for the remote, waiting to hear from support if I can get my universal remote to operate this equipment
- no support for NTFS files on the USB drive
- FF and REW behaves abnormally at times, won't stop when you press play again.
- no chapter skip on VOB files (pain in the neck)
- slow startup
- flimsy remote
- no DVI output - has a D4 that is good if you live in Japan only.
Nice and good:
- wireless streaming
- easy to set up and use
- plays almost any media file off the network, USB drive or DVD/CD Was this review helpful?

I have used three of these devices and this is by far the best. However it is far from perfect. Out of the box it worked like a charm. Both software and hardware set-up was easy & straight forward. YOU MUST READ THE MAUNAL! There are things this box does and doesnt do, some are easy to figure out on the fly and some are a must read. Trust me on this. Open the box and do what you can. Then pick up the manual and read it from front to back. OK I will let you skip one chapter. There is a chapter on Windows XPs built in Windows Media Connect (WMC) software, save yourself the time and trouble. WMC takes a few downloads and is only a different version of the software that comes with the unit. They both do exactly the same thing except WMC does it in a much more sloppy and painful way.
Screen shots and choosing options on the TV screen are really good. It can delve into sub folders on par with any computer. Make as many as you like giving you incredible choices in filing your personal video collection. Despite claims of wmv playback it will not play wmv7 or wmv8 files. The manual hints that firmware of the future may someday. The unit struggles with in FF or REW and all the buttons will lock up. FF & REW has 3 speeds. The first (slowest) REW on two units I tested said REW but moved the video forward. The 2nd & 3rd REW worked properly. Any format that will stream can be also be archived to a CD or DVD and played from the built in DVD player. DVD play is flawless when playing DVDs and about the same when playing archived material. Music streams perfect and there are plenty of options for playing albums, artist and songs in the style of your choice. Slides shows are also perfect with plenty of options. Has a surf the web option that both works and sucks. You cant fit a web page on the TV screen and the content is hard to read and use. You must use the included remote, no multifunction remotes mention that I can find mention or have codes for Buffalo products of any type. I have three expensive learning remotes and none of the can operate it even with there respective auto find codes turned on.
Buy it for the wireless video streaming. The music is a great bonus but if music is all you are after then you have mush cheaper options. Same is true for slide shows of the family picnic. You have cheaper options. If you want to surf the web sit down at your computer and take a pass on this.
Bottom line, I love it even with its imperfections. And I am sure by the time mine is obsolete (a year or so) something much better will be out there.
I received my LinkTheater last week and was able to play movies, photos, and music almost immediately from my PC via a wireless connection. Movies played from a PC hard drive via wireless 802.11g was super-smooth.

But all is not perfect in LinkTheater land...Issues so far:

* If you plan on playing DVD content that is spread across multiple VOB files, LinkTheater will introduce a 2 second glitch when it transitions between sections of a movie. To avoid the problem, you will need to manually re-rip the movie into a single VOB file.

* LinkTheater only supports connected USB drives that are partitioned for FAT32, not NTFS. So keep in mind that files on a FAT32 partition cannot be larger than 4GB. (most DVD movies are 4GB or greater)

* After changing batteries several times, I've concluded that remote control performance is fairly poor. Plan on pressing buttons multiple times in order for LinkTheater to acknowledge the command. And at times, I needed to press a different button, then the button I intended to press in order to get things to work.

* Some of my DIVX5 format movies would only play for a few seconds before freezing up the LinkTheater.

* Chapter-skip during video playback is disabled. So to move freely within a VOB file, you will need to fast-forward or rewind or....press the right/left buttons on the cursor to move a % forward or backward. Keep in mind that this is a % within the file you are currently viewing. So if your movie is spread across 4 VOBs, and you advance to 50%. You are actually only jumping forward 12.5% into the movie. Got that???

* No support for iTunes files. (at least I couldn't get it to work).

* Internet feature is useless. None of my favorite websites rendered well enough to be useable.

* Not sure what compression/codac is being used, but none of the video files from my Sony Camcorder or JVC Camcorder were viewable through the LinkTheater. I suspect I'll have to convert them to a standard MPEG format and try again.

My goal was to get TIVO-like features for my DVD collection. LinkTheater is almost there. Just a few rough edges, but overall I'm happy with the purchase.

I received the unit, unplugged my old DVD player and simply plugged the LinkTheater into the same cables (component and digital audio) and selected the correct output with the remote control (HD) and the unit was ready to use after a few simple setup screens. Windows media connect immediately found the unit on my WiFi network and asked me to designate the directories for media files the unit would access. After I installed the included LinkTheater software on my computer (a much better and easier to use interface than media connect), both Windows media connect and LinkTheater showed up on the unit's home page. It works beautifully. I can view my thousands of digitized slide photos and my many hours of video on my 42" plasma HDTV in my family room instead of my computer minitor in the basement. This is a far better (and cheaper) solution than a media computer in the family room. Was this review helpful?

I have purchased a number of different media players over the last two years and this is probably the best. It works very well as a DVD player, playing PAL and NTSC discs. As a streaming media player it works better than any of the others that I have tried. It supports a very large array of media formats and excels at playing them all. It is one of the few that seems to support high-definition content. This too seems to work as advertised. Plus, the LinkTheater is one of the few that supports a decent depth of folder structure for organizing media. Overall, it is an excellent choice for anyone wishing to find a platform for both watching DVDs and digital medis stored on Windows PCs. Was this review helpful?
