5 of 5 So far, So Good Tuesday, March 18, 2008 Frank Lightsey from Sunshine, NC
I purchased the Buffalo 500GB LinkStation Pro Network Shared Storage - SATA, 2 x USB 2.0, 7200RPM - Network Hard Drive
last month to use as an automatic backup location for data on both my and my wife's computers. My wife has a wired connection to the network and I use a wireless (54g) connection. The unit has performed perfectly for us. Once I installed the backup software that came with the unit on each computer and identified what folders were to be maintained, things have worked as designed. The only problem I have is that my wireless connection took a while to establish the backup baseline. Much slower than the wired connection.
Anytime I create a new file or modify an existing file in those folders the file is automatically backed up to the NAS. I even have an access database application that gets backed up when I close the application. This unit is well worth the money and very easy to use Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Buffalo LS Pro 500 Saturday, February 02, 2008 A Customer from Mansquan NJ
Here goes my first look at the Buffalo Linkstation Pro 500, installed and been using the item for 2 weeks, here are the good and bad.
The Good: install in a windows environment is easily and smooth, if you have some networking experience then it is even easier. I had the unit plugged in and working in less that 10 min. Setting up share was also easy using a web browser I logged on the station, created users and shares assigned password, all the settings are straight forward. As I said having little knowledge of networks makes the process brainless. Performance is good, I do not have a Gig router so I am stuck at 100mb, so moving my large videos and MP3 took a some time. I set up Meda Player 11 to share my videos and MP3 form this drive (took some work and adding a registry key to force Media Player to share networked files). Using the Xbox 360 I am able to view and play my files on my TV. There is a noticeable delay when I play the videos, but once it starts it all flows smooth.
The Bad: So far I have encountered a security problem that other users have encountered as well. Here is the problem; If you access a public (No password protected) share on the station, and then try to access a share that has a password I am not able to log on . It seems that there is a problem with windows access the drive using a guest account when access non protected shares. This drive only allows one user name and since windows logs on with guest it then can not log in with my user and password. I have found some work around for this problem btu I don't quite understand the solution yet, for now I make sure that I log on to the password protected share first.
Backup software that comes with the unit is simple I did not care for it and uninstalled it and use my own.
The unit has been running for two weeks without issues, no re-boots no disk errors. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Fast setup! Tuesday, May 29, 2007 A Customer from Roswell, GA
It took 10 minutes to get this drive installed on my office network. It recognized my Domain right away and within no time asked me if I wanted to create a mapped drive. I use it to store my co-worker's older Outlook emails in .pst format. In real time, they can move an item from their inbox and archive it to this drive. I'll probably get another one soon to create a backup of the current drive. Couldn't be easier to install, probably even easier for a home user who has only a few computers on their network and no Domain to deal with. Was this review helpful?

I cannot recommend this network drive more highly! Our network has two Macs and three Windows computers and when we plugged the drive into our Buffalo wireless router, all of the computers could see the drive on the network immediately.
We transferred all of the shared files to the new drive and discovered that it is quite "speedy". While I cannot give you any scientific numbers, everyone here using the files and photos on the LinkStation Pro drive agrees that the access and write speed is perceptively the same as when the files were on their local drive.
As a bonus, the drive is super quiet. There is some quiet clacking while reading/writing but that's not distracting. There is no fan noise.
The drive comes with some PC software for management and back ups, but we haven't bothered to install it as of yet. No Mac software is included, but that hasn't been important - the Macs are using the drive as we intended.
Buy it - you will not be disappointed. Was this review helpful?

I've been waiting to get my hands the Linkstation Pro for a long time after reading great reviews about it. All I can say is WOW!!! My previous NAS product was the Linksys NSLU2 with a 150GB USB 2.0 drive. I have both of these products connected on a 100 megabit network. The Linkstation Pro is by FAR the faster of the two... in both transfer times (2 to 3x faster) , bootup time, and operational consistency. This Linkstation Pro really pulls ahead on a gigabit network. Was this review helpful?
