    Buffalo LinkStation Live 500GB Review

Being a consumer NAS (Network Attached Storage) device with 500GB of storage - up to four times what you'll find on most laptops - it can be configured to run with a single machine or, more interestingly, connected to a network and shared among a number of users. Security can be set up to limit the access of shared users, so you don't have to merely use it as one large back-up drive. ...read the full review

4 of 5 One Minor Negative Tuesday, July 01, 2008
    A Customer from Philadelphia, PA

Overall, this is a great product. I bought the original LinkStation a few years back and I haven't had any problems. I wanted to use this new LinkStation as my primary and backup data to my old LinkStation. But after a call to the tech support, I found out that I can not do a backup because the older model is not compatiable - USB or network. I was told I have to use a client backup software to backup from one LinkStation to another going through a PC. That was a big disappointment. Other than that it works great and gigabit is a lot faster than 10/100.

1 of 5 Does not work Wednesday, May 28, 2008
    A Customer from Chicago, il
Purchased this drive to back up my home network. About a week after trying it out, it stopped working. After a few calls to the manufacturer, I sent the drive back for a replacement. Note: I had to pay for postage. Received the replacement. Started up fine. I was gone for a couple weeks, came home and turned the drive on again. Here we go again, same problem as first drive. It just beeps at me. Cant get it to work at all. Now Im back to calling support again. If you have a choice, get something else. The first thing a back-up drive has to be is RELIABLE. If it doesnt work for more than a week, well that doesnt seem reliable to me. And of course you have to add the fact that they make you pay for shipping a defective produce back to them. I'll update this when I get more infomation.

    4 of 5 Works Great! Sunday, March 09, 2008
    SDM from Mpls, MN
I read thru all the reviews and compared this unit to other alternatives and decided it was the best value for what I wanted. Mainly, ethernet connectivity and support for adding additional USB drives. So far, after a month, it works great. I did not find the Admin pages to be that slow if it was the only thing the drive was working on. Configure first, then copy your data is my suggestion. PCAST is interesting, but I can't find a reason to use it over a mapped drive with iTunes (yet). FTP web site could use more features. I like the fact it can play a MP3 file, but only one file at a time limits it's usefulness. Overall it works as it should and I hope it will have many years of service.

    4 of 5 Great Buy Monday, January 28, 2008
    A Customer from Manhattan Kansas
Great value for the money. Easy set-up, immediately recogonizes Itunes and files from Photoshop. Only problem is using Canon Selphy printer - but that seems to be more an issue with the photo printer and LinkStation file system.

    1 of 5 what a disappointment Thursday, January 17, 2008
    A Customer from Cleveland, OH
As always Buy.com shipped the item out quickly! But that was where the fun ended. I had hoped to use this NAS device to back up my computers at home. After a quick install/configuration process, which was made easy by the included software, the configuration setting began changing on their own. As a result the device was no longer recognized on my network. I spent about 4 hours on the phone with Buffalo support (this was over 3 calls). We flashed the firmware and then I could see the device and everything seemed fine. However, after a several hours or a day the settings would mysteriously change again. Buffalo tech support finally said that the unit was defective and suggested that it be returned to Buy.com, which I did. I had hoped to receive a replacement but Buy.com's return process seems very slow. I shipped the NAS back to them more than 3 weeks ago, the tracking shows that the package was received 10 days ago and still I have not received a replacement or any indication from Buy.com that they have even received the return. Other issues with the NAS device. The software and configuration interface are not ready for primetime. There are gramatical and typographical errors, the language was defaulting to Japanese (making it difficult to even figure out how to set it to English). In summary, this item is great in concept and poor in performance.

3 of 5 Setup is difficult Monday, January 07, 2008
    Charles Cherry from Springfield, IL
This product performs well as a basic file server and for sharing folders on the network. The installation manual is quite sparse, with lots of pictures but not enough information. Anything but the most basic setup is kind of tricky. If you use Windows XP and want to password-protect any of your shared folders, mapping to multiple shares can be a real pain. I have yet to get the print server feature to work with my HP 1020 USB printer. I bought two of these because of the great price - one to use as a shared network drive, and the other one to back up the first one. It took me a while to get that set up properly as well.

    1 of 5 I'm shipping this one back! Friday, December 28, 2007
    Kahuna from Cleveland, Oh
If it worked the price would be great! Trouble is, this thing kept failing. I called tech support several times - each time they suggested re-flashing the firmware, which I did. The device kept loosing the configuration information and therefore was not recognized on my network. Each time this problem occurred it was necessary to reflash the firmware. Finally, Buffalo admitted that there was a problem and suggested returning the NAS. Maybe the product just isn't ready for prime-time. There were a few other problems (like default language for the browser interface coming up in Japanese, mis-spellings on error messages/dialog boxes, poor online help/documentation and in general a clumbsy interface). While it was working it was fine, I like having a large NAS device for back-ups and non-critical files/info. Not sure if I will replace this with the same or look for something different. Other peopel have written great reviews for the product - maybe I just got a bum device.

5 of 5 Solid piece of machinery Friday, November 30, 2007
    Joseph from Chicago
Having a large CD collection, I wanted to go fully digital. This Buffalo Drive has helped me rest assure that my music is in good hands. It's been running non stop since purchasing it over 3 weeks ago. It's virtually silent, and a great companion to the Sonos system. This was well worth the money!

5 of 5 Great for backup Friday, November 30, 2007
A Customer from Virginia Beach, VA
The linkstation live was very easy to setup. It took less than 10 minutes to get up and going on our LAN. It is great for it's intended uses, storing files and back ups. If you are considering a NAS for storing mp3 files or video for use on networked computers you may want to consider using a wired network or upgrading to a Wireless-n wireless network. We have found that setting up a large iTunes library across a wireless LAN can be a very ardous process. We also had some minor lagging issues when trying to watch DVD files stored on the NAS.
