I didn't buy this drive from Buy.com, but I've owned it for about 9 months and I felt I should respond to Patrick E's negative review. This drive has ALWAYS operated flawlessly. It is noiseless. 6 hours to reformat? Say what? Only the format of a previously unformatted drive takes that kind of time. Reformatting 500gb from FAT32 to NTFS takes MINUTES, not hours. How do I know? I too reformatted this drive from FAT32 to NTFS. Minutes, I tell you. I have been reading a good deal of reviews here and elsewhere about drives disappearing from USB connectivity. NEVER happened to me using any USB device of any type. My wager: the problem is RARELY the drive. It's usually system hardware: the motherboard, the usb bus or the cables. USB is not now a Vista headache. Was this review helpful?

I bought this drive because I had read several positive reviews of the Buffalo external drives on the net. It arrived quickly (as always with Buy.com) and was very easy to connect to my Vista system. I immediately noticed that this drive has a pretty loud hum, it could be heard above the other noise in my home office. It came pre-formatted fat-32, so I reformatted it to NTFS in order to be a bit more efficient. The format took around 6 hours (not impressive, but also not horrible). I copied around 30GB of music files to it with no problem. I then tried to copy another 180 GB of doc files...after about 5 minutes...I received an error that the source drive could not be read. I opened Windows explorer and found that I could open the files on the source drive, but the destination drive was no longer visible. I power cycled the Buffalo drive and it re-appeared in windows explorer. Now when I try to write to the drive, I can write 20-30 files...then it disappears from Windows. If you get this unit, test it hard during the 14-day grace period that Buy.com supports, otherwise you will be in close contact with Buffalo support for a while. Was this review helpful?
