Alan Cumming and Paul Ruebens shine in supporting roles. Buddy is the true story of Gertrude "Trudy" Lintz (Russo), an eccentric socialite in the 1920s, who is the most generous keeper of animals since Noah. When she rescues a baby gorilla from a terminal illness, "Buddy" is taken into her home, nursed back to health and taught to adapt to the environment of man and that of her zany household. In addition to her menagerie of pets, she has four chimpanzees that she treats as her children, teaching them table manners, how to play croquet, do light housework and say their prayers. All are outfitted in tailor-made clothing from Bergdorf-Goodman. But Trudy's favorite is Buddy, the gentle gorilla, and she opens her heart to him as if he were her own child. But, as Buddy grows, so do the problems he encounters in this civilized society into which he has been thrust, creating a series of hilarious events and a dilemma for his adopted parents and community. Editor's Note
A gentle, family-oriented dramatization of the autobiography ("Animals Are My Hobby") of daffy Gertrude Lintz (Rene Russo,) a softhearted, softheaded 1920s New York socialite who transformed her upstate mansion into a personal menagerie containing cats, dogs, birds, chimps, and the titular baby gorilla, all of whom were trained to wear clothing and behave as humans. Produced by the Jim Henson Company.
