| | | From the Archies to Britney Spears, this ambitious anthology reveals the light and dark sides of bubblegum music and features interviews with many of the genre's major creators. Illustrations throughout. Annotation: Bubblegum music, which had its heyday during a short period at the end of the 1960s, was--not unreasonably--branded for years by the rock music cognoscenti as a musically insignificant, cynical, revenue-generating machine aimed at bilking pre-teens out of their lunch money. Nevertheless, it remains infectiously hummable and ridiculously catchy. It's also obviously a guilty pleasure for the many respectable music writers who gather here to hymn its praises. They bring an air of nerdy enthusiasm to a genre unaccustomed to such close study, posing questions like who exactly sang on the second and third Archies albums, and why the Ohio Express's 1969 hit "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" is still remembered with affection, while worthy underground bands from the same era, like the Electric Flag or Rhinoceros, are not. Entertaining and informative interviews with bubblegum impresarios Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz explore their lyrics' often subversive sexual innuendo, while the careers of other major bubblegum writers and producers, many of whom contributed to classic hits by more respected artists like the Animals and the Yardbirds, are also assessed.
