The soundtrack album to the 2002 film about a hip-hop-centered romance has 15 songs by a wide variety of the music's veterans and more recently emerged talents. Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, and Eric B. & Rakim are some of the better-known contributors on a compilation that mixes neo-soul and harder hip-hop styles. In the neo-soul bag, there's Jill Scott, whose romantic "Easy Conversation" is one of the better selections. Jazz/R&B crossover singer Cassandra Wilson covers Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," while the Roots offer some of the harder beats and scratching on the remix of "Act Too (Love of My Life)." On the whole it's an adequate sampler of some early 21st century hip-hop sounds, leaning toward the more pop-accessible segment of the genre. ~ Richie Unterberger
For a film described as the African-American "When Harry Met Sally," this movie's music producers tapped into a wellspring of neo-soul rather than the Sinatra-like flavorings of Harry Connick, Jr. The result is BROWN SUGAR, a soundtrack packed with a dizzying array of talent drawn from the worlds of soul, hip-hop, and jazz. Among the many highlights are the sensual Erykah Badu/Common duet "Love Of My Life (An Ode To Hip Hop)," prodded along by light beats and feather-light organ fills, Angie Stone's sanctified "Bring Your Heart" and Jill Scott's wispy "Easy Conversation."
Other tasty sounds include the Roots' hard-edged remix of "Act Too (Love Of My Life)," Eric B. and Rakim's classic "Paid In Full (7 Minutes Of Madness Coldcut Remix)," and Cassandra Wilson's delicate cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." Most impressive is renaissance man Mos Def, who takes time off from starring in the movie to appear on three versions of the title cut: a juicy "Extra Sweet" duet with Faith Evans, a jittery "Raw" take with Talib Kweli (aka Black Star), and a bouncy "Fine" solo turn.

Producer: Chief X-Cel; David Gates; Eric B.; Erykah Badu; Tom Sarig; Kenny Whitehead; Hi-Tek; Henri Charlemagne; James Poyser; Kanye West; Missy Elliott; Andre Harris; Angie Stone; Rahsaan Patterson; Rakim; Raphael Saadiq; Scott Storch; Vidal Davis; Barry Cole
