I have used Dell 1600n and 1815n for the last 4 years. On average, once a year I had to either get a replacement under warranty or buy a new one. Dell customer service was great, but the printer could not last more than a year. I recently switched to this Brother machine. It is much faster than dell and is more reliable. Toner is similar in price or cheaper. PC to fax option was preliminary and dysfunctional in dell. But, Brother does an excellent job with PC to fax.
I don't know about durability, but the performance is way superior than Dell multifunction machines.
One problem with Brother is envelope feeding. It shrinks and damages the envelopes on manual feed. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Exceptional Printing excellent on Network Thursday, December 04, 2008 Dave from Miami, Florida
i purchased the first unit over a year ago and due to economy and powerful features i got to love it last month i got the third one for our other locations. Simply I Love it
scanning is fast you can send and receive faxes electronically all our faxes go to a folder in PC and we share that folder so everyone has constant access to those files so we don't have fax missing and no more junk fax.
easy to setup, duplexing is great. a solid performer
the only difficulty is getting jammed paper out of scanner. there is no easy release and that is the only problem we experiance Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Brother MFCs Rock! Wednesday, November 19, 2008 A Customer from Dallas, TX
This model is the black and white sister to the 9840 that we also have. The feature I like about it the most is the FTP scanning. Just walk up hit a few buttons and its off to the digital 'inbox' on our server. Super fast for b/w scan... a bit slower for color 300 dpi. Start up time for printing is quick too (several seconds). Color print quality is OK; less so than our Lexmark. However, the Lexmark takes forever to warm up (+minutes) and the cartridges are almost twice as much as the Brother's (Brother toner is very reasonable). All in all, a superb workhorse for our small office. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Good Product, needs some tweaking. Monday, October 20, 2008 bobmiller3 from Bryson City, North Carolina
Works well. This is a replacement for the model prior to this. I think they should design the paper trays, so they are interchangable. I also think, the toner cartridge, shold have more capacity, considering the price paid and the price for replacement toner. Was this review helpful?

So far so very good with the Brother MFC-8860DN. It's exactly what we needed to replace a much larger and more expensive Xerox Multi-Function Office copier. We gained space and a laser fax and scanner to boot! So far, a great piece of equipment. It is perfect for this small business home office! Was this review helpful?

Overall, I've been both impressed and pleased with this machine. The duplex capacity to copy or print from and to two sided originals makes my life much easier. While learning your way around the controls takes a bit of effort, the results are worth it. This machine can do almost anything a "home office" would need. So far, its paper handling ability has been 100% even turning pages over front to back etc. No paper jams yet.
It is more expensive than other models, but if you need or can use the duplexing, and the other extra power, it is worth it. Was this review helpful?

I've had this printer for a couple of weeks and I'm loving it so far. It's very fast. Contrary to what I had read in other reviews, I don't find it at all noisy. The scanning functions are very nice. The OCR works beautifully and it will scan direct to PDF which is useful. I also like the duplexing features. The only thing bad that I can even think of about it right now is that it's kinda big. You definitely wouldn't want it on your desk. Even sitting on a two drawer filling cabinet it's kind of precarious. It took a while to get all the networking and firewall issues set up, but that's not the fault of the printer. Was this review helpful?

First let me say that I love this printer.
Pros: Fast, printing, easy setup, convenient network operation including scanning. Print quality was up to my standards - until I reached 129 pages printed.
Cons: At that point the remanufactured starter toner cartridge gave out. The console gave a message "Toner Life Ended". I should have had about 3000 pages and I can feel toner in the cartridge so refilling would not help. Brother customer service is sending a new cartridge out. This seems to be a relative common problem based on my reading of reviews on other websites.
If this problem is resolved I would rate this printer an overall 5.

I bought this printer due to my home office was in dire need of a high end printer. This printer is really going to help my business to grow. I was using an inkjet printer before. But due to the amount of workload that was building up the laserjet was the only way to go. I found that setting up this printer was very fast and easy to operate. I know there are some printers out there that is more complicated than this. but dealing with legal size paper and having the ability to fax and scan the full size document at one time is a dream come true. Would I recommend this product to anyone? The Answer to that question is yes. The only down side at all to the printer is how large it is. But due to all the functions It is a winner in my book.
The duplex capibility is great. Expecialy if you are trying to save on paper.

Amazingly fast, good quality print and it has that hard-to-find, legal-size copy glass! Fax was just a little tricky to set-up the first time, but it works great now. Duplexer has been very handy. Large paper capacity. Scanner software has been much easier to use than my HP. This is my first Brother printer, and have been very pleased with the purchase. Was this review helpful?

This printer is a phenomenal small office printer. The setup was easy and basic, and the printer seems very well put together. There are no miscellaneous parts; everything has its place and has a purpose. The speed is GREAT. For offices who do a lot of copying, it's a great purchase. The only lag time is between the computer and the printer. The printer itself functions speedily. The only other trouble I've had is in networking this printer, and in setting it up for faxing capabilities. I'm assuming that once I understand the printer though, that it will be as easy as the rest of the setup. Was this review helpful?

Having personal experience with these units, I can say it exceeded expectations by a wide margin. It was used in a 6 person office as the primary printer and photocopier. It did some faxing (worked well) and no scanning (we had a high speed HP unit for scanning and OCR). It worked everyday without any problem whatsoever. Was this review helpful?

My first Brother printer and am very happy with this selection. Toner cartridges are high capacity and economical. Very quick to first print, excellent ADF and duplexer built right in. Setup was a 2 minute affair once the software is installed. Great features and high output, an excellent choice. Was this review helpful?
