I've purchased and installed 5 Brother 5240 printers in the past 2 years. All have worked perfectly with no printing problems. If you purchase the high-yield toner cartridge (TN580)the printing copy yield is very high.

This printer fits comfortably on the small printer platform of an office desk. It took about 30 seconds to setup and use. I now have it connected to a wireless network that supports both Mac and PC platforms with no problems. This is our home printer and has effectively replaced the HP Photosmart C6800 series as our default printer. If you do any sizable amount of printing, consider this: HP Photosmart 02 cartridges, $50 for black & color "bonus" pack, or about $35 for black, and $35 for color. The toner cartridge on this Brother HL-5240 printer can be replaced for as low as $50. HP Photosmarts will not allow one to print 7,000 pages before replacing toner, even if you are printing in black and white only-- trust me, my wife is a graduate student. Generally, one can get color digital prints done at Target, Walmart or Walgreens for less than buying a color photo printer and printing them off yourself-- especially when considering the cost of replacement toner. If you prefer a small laser printer that has wireless connectivity built in, check out the Brother HL-2170W for another great Buy.com deal. Buy this printer with confidence!

This is an excellent printer. The print quality is great and the unit itself looks great and feels well-built. In regard to one reviewer's comment about excessive power draw causing the lights to flicker when the printer goes on, I did not experience this. I have owned what I suppose is the predecessor of this model, the Brother HL-5140, for several years. Its flawless performance and perfect reliability are why I shopped for another Brother printer. For any Linux users out there, I can tell you when I installed this in Mandriva 2008, the automatic setup installed it as a "generic PCL printer." I am sure this would have worked fine, but I went back and manually selected the HL-5140 driver (HL-5240 is not listed). It works perfectly.

This is a great little office printer for stand alone applications If you are a Mac user and use it in classic applications, you'll have to start up in OS 9 to install the drivers

I can't comment on toner or the durability yet. I have had the printer for about two weeks. Prints great and a bargain. Only thing I wanted to point out is that it draws too much power when initializing or printing. The lights in the study flicker when it prints.
