5 of 5 Best Color Laser Hands Down Wednesday, May 13, 2009 Netscvngr from Philadelphia, PA
I bought this printer for my wife for Christmas and so far 6 months later we have had no problems. Setup and configuration of wireless was breeze and we now enjoy printing from all 3 of our computers all over the house to this one printer. I previously had two Dell CN3110 and those started spilling toner after a few months this printer is rock solid and we love the built in duplexer. Printing on both sides is slower but it is much better than having to print a job in batches and manually flip the pages one by one. Now whenever we have to print doublesided flyers, presentations or programs it just prints at the touch of a button. It even prints great photos, in the past I used a canon pixma mx700 and was disappointed at the quality this looks much better than that ever did. Simply put this is a great printer you will not be disappointed!!! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Perfect for Quick Jobs Tuesday, February 24, 2009 EL from Brooklyn, New York
Although this is a color laser printer, if your print jobs are color-critical or if you need photo-quality prints, this is not the one for you. You will probably need to spend at least $500 to get one that does that well (like a OKI). But for under $350, this is the best you can get.
When bought this over a year ago, I was in school studying graphic design. I used it to print out proofs & drafts to show in class & to ensure designs were laid out the way I wanted, before spending the money to print full size on expensive paper with my photo-quality inkjet printer or at a print shop.
This printer prints fast, sharp text & handles small amount of color graphic (not photos) very well. I also LOVE the auto-duplex feature, which let you print on both sides of a sheet of paper, perfect for drafts. Wireless connectivity is also a plus. Since it's relatively big, I didn't want to put it on my already cramped desk. So this allows me to put it in the corner of the room. I have also only had like 3 paper jams & they were all my fault (I put in those extremely cheap, thin paper).
I would highly recommend this to anyone for basic household/small business use, if budget allows, even if this will be the only printer you have. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Excellent Laser Friday, January 02, 2009 SciTeach from SC
This is my first color laser, but I install many printers on the job, both wired & wireless (including several of these in workgroups). There are currently no printers on the market that compete well with the HL-4070CDW considering: quality, features, interfaces, ease of setup, and cost of supplies. (This is critical; I don't want to re-buy a printer loading it with supplies once!)
The setup is amazingly simple; run the CD and the printer finds itself on the network. Out of the box quality was a bit lacking; it seems most users don't know the plethora of tweaks you can easily do from the web interface, front panel, or printer driver. I touched up the gray scale, black scale, and switched to fine and things look beautiful. (B&W printing match my HP laser.)
If you do complex graphics, you need to pop in a SODIMM memory chip-- about $20. Double siding and booklet printing is a great feature. Feeds paper very well, although I'm afraid to use over 48lb, as paper path is not straight. I highly recommend Was this review helpful?

This seems to be a great printer. The colors are vibrant and it is quick. Was this review helpful?

The printer is fantastic!! If you follow the directions, setup is a breeze for both Windows and Mac laptops! The color is truly phenomenal. We do not use it to print professional photos, like the kids school pictures. However, we do incorporate photographs with text on heavy paper for brochures, business cards, etc..
I can't rave enough how well this looks... especially for the price. Much more cost effective than our inkjet! Built-in wireless allows us to print from any room we are in! 10 STARS********** Was this review helpful?

After reading many positive reviews we were very disappointed in this machines ability to print photos.
It was brand new and printed the photos with lines in them. Our other graphics printed great...but I was not impressed with the photo quality. Was this review helpful?

This is truly a good substitute for an office ink-jet. It prints color pages fast, the quality is excellent. It's also comparatively quiet and gives me a feeling of well-made solidity. Toner life seems good, and is already much better than an ink-jet. Very satisfied!
A few things I don't like, but not enough to make me unhappy overall:
- Paper handling - no direct feed, the paper always has to come out the top, so envelopes crease.
- Speed - it's pretty good, but my old black and white Bother HL-6050 is still faster, especially on duplexing. I thought I would get rid of the HL-6050 for the new HL-4070 but now I see the advantages to keep both. For big jobs (100's of BW pages double side) the 6050 is much better. Stronger engine, faster. For color, brochures, double sided small jobs, the 4070 is great.
- Input tray is skimpy, I wish it were 500 sheets standard.
- I'm not crazy about the Mac driver, it doesn't seem as full-featured as the windows one.
Overall, I'd buy it again, and by the way, I've used Brother machines for years (also HP and Canon). With Brother the price/quality ratio is always very good. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Color Printer, Great Price! Saturday, March 22, 2008 A Customer from Spanaway, Washington
This printer is exactly what I was looking for. It arrived quickly, in good condition, was easy to set up, and has all of the features I need. I have another Brother, laser printer, which I have been very pleased with, so I chose Brother, when I decided to get a color laser printer. I'm very satisfied. I would recommend this printer and JR.COM to others Was this review helpful?

I had a Panasonic mono laser with duplexing which was okay, but would jam frequently. I have an Epson Photo inkjet for my color printing, but the kids have an older Lexmark for their all around printing. The Epson doesn't give me any problems, but the Lexmark was constantly requiring head cleaning, and cartridge replacement. And, those cartridges are expensive!
This Brother printer had gotten good reviews, and I was ready to retire my Panasonic and the kids' Lexmark. At the price, it seemed like a good choice.
So far the printer is working wonderfully. It's a lot faster than any of the other printers we've had. The duplex function is faster than my old printer. I'd read that it's very noisy, but by comparison to what we used to have, it's much quieter (my old laser printer sounded like an airplane taking off.) So, I guess it's all relative on that point.
The wireless networking is great! The kids computer is in the other room, but once I set up the printer on the network, their PC recognized it just fine. My desk is a tangle of wires, so one less wire is a good thing! Now, everyone in the house can print with no extra wires.
The printer comes with full sized cartridges. We've had it about a month and a half, maybe two months. (The girls have printed several projects and papers which would probably have sucked up all of the ink in the old Lexmark) but the Brother is going along just fine. I think, however, when it does come time to replace the cartridges, I'll probably get the extra capacity ones. But, that's just me.
The color output is okay. I'm not using the printer for presentations or display purposes, just for everyday printing and projects for the kids. Still... let me just print up a nice color picture on the good laser paper and see how it does... Well, it's not my Epson, but it's not bad. I think it would do just fine if I had to print up a Powerpoint presentation for work.
All in all, given the price and features, I highly recommend this printer. I like the fact that it's a laser, I had to have one that has duplexing. And, the wireless connectivity is the best!
Overall, I'm very pleased. Was this review helpful?

I needed to get my neighbor to lift the thing, because it's huge and heavy. The next issue was setting it up on my wireless connection. Although the directions are very detailed, they might have missed a step (I'll admit I don't read directions that closely, though). I had to disable my WPA security to install it (temporarily), but when it was supposed to be recognized on my network, it wasn't. I ended up doing what I always do -- push buttons (this time on the printer itself), and it became visible.
Then the next issue was re-upping the WPA security - start fresh, similar issues. Turns out the printer itself has a place where you can enter the network password - a little tedious because you have to go through the entire alphabet to get to some of the characters using arrows, if I recall - but ultimately it worked.
And the prize? Duplex is wonderful. It's really useful for when I travel and want to carry around less paper. If big enough print, I do 2-up duplex (say, for a PowerPoint) and skinny it way down.
Print: not as saturated color as with the office lasers I'm used to. But it's great for my purposes. I haven't printed full photos, but I would imagine it's not perfect for that purpose. But it's ideal for office printing.
Wireless? LOVE IT. I have the printer attached via USB to my office computer and wirelessly to my home laptop, which is usually in another room. Both work great.
I'm happy with this beast. Was this review helpful?

I have had this printer for three weeks now and in every category it has exceeded my expectations. We were behind on our duplex color printing and had quite a backlog. There was no break-in period, no mercy. We printed over 5,000 full color sheets in the first three days. Not one paper jam, not one bad page (and we were using heavy stock). I have had brothers in the past, all have performed just as flawlessly. Also, buy.com saved me a significant amount of money over the big box retailers on the purchase price and provided surprisingly fast free shipping. An all around positive experience! I have been a long time user of Brother MFCs for our small office environment. I can honestly say they have never let us down. This product is no exception. From box open to first page out was about ten minutes and all of the features make this a best buy. The color is excellent for our needs and the duplexer saves a great deal on paper for files and mailers we do. There are a range of connection options but the network setup was quick and easy. The wireless worked flawlessly also. The only con in my mind - I wish the wireless was N capable also. That option would make it perfect. And the Buy.com price was well below everyone else. With free ground shipping it still arrived in two days. Way to go Buy.com!! Was this review helpful?

This is the first laser printer for my home office; so far I used only inkjets. Definitely an excellent option, no more plugged nozzles to fight at the beginning of every print job. Brother has done a superior job in designing a color laser printer at affordable price. It is very easy to operate, great speed and fantastic price and its installation was a breeze with no hurdles. Highly recommend for everyone to buy. Was this review helpful?

I wanted a brand that was reliable, that gave me good results and was not going to hurt me in my wallet when ordering replacement supplies.
I read many reviews before I purchased the Brother HL-4070CDW. This printer got the best overall total in the above categories. I have used it now for 2 weeks and I feel it is exceeding my expectations so far. Was this review helpful?
