Brother HL-2140 Compact, Personal Laser Printer

What a great addition to my home office. It has a bigger footprint than I expected, but average for lasers. It heats up quickly, is only moderately noisy, and spits out pages quickly. I was getting slight smudges on the first pages, but that was fixed by cleaning the drum unit with its green tab (slide the tab back and forth several times to clean the wire). You can set DPI at 300, 600 and 1200. There is a toner saver mode, which I think still looks great for regular printing too. The initial toner is apparently good for only about 1500 pages. I'd have expected more, but then again that's how any printer manufacturer makes the real money: selling you new toner and ink cartridges. And I did buy it for only $54 including shipping. My nighttime order was processed and *shipped* the next day, and because it was from a NJ warehouse, I got it the next day after that!

This is an awesome little laser printer. Arrived in no time, as all products ordered from Buy.com, worked right out of the box: very easy to setup. The quality of printouts is amazing. I would highly recommend this for home or office. And you cannot beat the price. I always compare prices before buying, and Buy.com wins in 99% cases.

I was tired of paying $ 80 every few months to keep feeding my Epson color inkjet when using it in B+W mode. Then this Brother Laser printer came through one day at $54, so I grabbed it and a spare box of toner. It works just like advertised on my Mac. Paper occasionally jams, but fixing that is a minor inconvenience, especially if the price of printing drops significantly. So far I'm impressed!

Considering I paid $70 after discounts, it is the best printer in the world! It's plenty fast for a desktop printer, very good quality printing and it looks like it produces a lot of pages per toner cartridge! For 85% of what my staff prints, this unit is amazing. I am quite happy.

I really like this printer, it is an excellent value. I can't imagine that more expensive printers do anything to make them worth the extra money (excepting wireless network printing). The only feature I am not fond of is the paper tray. On my last printer the paper was held in a slot on the rear of the printer, it is much easier to change from letter to legal than this printer allows.

I purchased this printer for $63.00, that is only $10.00 more than the cartridges for my inkjet, it will print about 1500 pages at 300 dpi compared to 250 to 300 for the inkjet. The quality of print is very good and the speed is excellent.It would be very cost effective at twice the price.

I stick with Brother Products due to the fact that they have always offered excellent Mac Support. I currently use a MFC-8460N in my office and purchased this small laser for my son at college. He is very happy with both the print speed and quality. We considered changing to the 2170 due to its networking capability but how can you go wrong with this one for $60. Like all lasers, the initial toner cartridge only covers 2 to 3K pages but that should be expected when you pay the price of a single toner cartridge for both the printer and cartridge. The TN360 replacement cartridge will last us for years and it is available at a reasonable cost.

Already owned this model as well as another Brother model; bought this for this model again for my mother. This is a great home use laser printer and would recommend it to anyone. I haven't had any issues with any of my Brother printers. It seems that buy.com routinely offers this printer at a sub $100 price. I bought one from Buy.com for $55 and the last one for $64, so it may be worth to add it to your watch list and wait it out.

This printer fully meets my expectations. Allows me to reserve ink jet printer for photos and other jobs requiring color. I am able to print wirelessly from my Apple Powerbook, using OSX10.4.11 via the Airport, or directly from my iMac which is connected to the Airport. I do recommend downloading the latest driver, which is always a good idea. Set up was very easy. A very good value for the money. Another great experience with buy.com.

The HL-2140 delivers as promised. The case feels much more solid than I expected for a printer in this price range. Setup was a snap, and it's just right for the home office. It even does a great job printing envelopes. The one thing I wish it had was a little more memory, but for what I paid, it handles text and the occasional graphics without a problem.

Easy to set up, small footprint, quality of prints is great. Great alternative to an ink jet if you occasionaly print a few documents and envelopes.

Great prints. Even good using toner save mode. As one reviewer stated getting 800 pages from the original toner cartridge, it ships with a starter 1000 page-rated toner. At the price I paid for a refurbished model and with the $20 rebate it's still a great bargain especially compared to inkjets. Some page curl printing both sides of thin paper. Aside from duplex allows for multiple pages on one sheet and one page enlarged onto multiple sheets.

This is my second HL2140. This one is a Christmas gift. Great for light to medium usage. Print quality is very sharp, and print speed is fast. My main use is printing letters and envelopes, and music for playing my trumpet. Shipping was fast. Very satisfied.

We use this printer for invoicing, printing shipping labels, general accounting work, etc... It performs very well and takes up little desk space, and after rebate the cost was almost the same as a toner cartridge alone - a very good deal. We have another one of these printers and a laser fax that use the same toner cartridges and drums, so the duplicity is handy. The initial toner cartridge that comes with the printer doesn't seem to last long, but those that we have purchased and installed afterwards last much longer.

I was very happy with the product until the toner low sign was on after printing like 800 pages. Now, I am a bit pissed off about it: I need to spend another $30-40 to keep using. I don't feel this product as a bargain as I initially did.

it must be the best laser printer w/ only $50 AMR. performs really well without any problem. what i like the most is that the warming up is very short so that I can print it after seconds I turn it on. highly recommended!

It prints pretty quickly, doesn't take up too much space, and the output is good quality. For me, though, either the sleep mode does not work, or it is very loud for being in sleep mode.

The printer is fast, quiet and prints well. To get this printer for this low of price is more like a steal than a deal. I own several Brother products in our small business and have always found them to be very reliable. Buy.com always comes through with good prices and fast shipping.

The installation is easy. BTW, you will need to have a USB cable which is not included. It prints fast and clear, even in the toner saving mode. It makes some noise during the starting up or waking up, but the printing itself is not too noisy. It has a power switch, so you can just turn it off if you don't want to hear that starting up noise each time your PC wakes up from the stand-by mode. It does not print on both sides by itself. Double side printing involves manual steps.

Quiet and prints fine. Paper draw is a little hard to open and printing back side a bit of a challenge with 20# paper, but well worth the price.

Two days after my order the Brother 2040 laser printer was at my door. Incredible! was my reaction. I used the cd enclosed with the printer to install to Vista, and the device worked exactly as it should. It is much faster than the ink jet it replaces. Quiet enought. Oveall, I am very pleased with this printer.This my second purchase from Buy.com, and I am happy with their service.

Quick and easy to set up; didn't need the software (on XP). My third Brother printer, and I'll never switch -- in a word, they're trouble-free. (One is a multi, the other a fax, and this, which I use in a different location.)

I used to have an HP LaserJet that eventually went dead on me and this little laser printer works just as good if not better than my HP did. I really dig this printer and I'm extremely happy with my purchase overall

I have had no issues with the Brother printer I purchased. It was delivered on time, was easy to set up, and it is performing per the specs. I am using it on a 64bit version of Vista and all went smoothly. This printer has been a great replacement for my old, but reliable, HP 5L.

After years of printing ones and twos I recently had to print several lengthy docs. On my ancient HP722 this was painfully slow. So when I saw this deal I jumped on it. Although not unhappy with the HL-2140 there are a few things that keep me from giving it all 5's. As stated in other reviews, it is power hungry, keepng that fuser warm does use the juice. So I wouldn't leave it on keeping it ready to print for any length of time. Also as stated the noise level is a little high, but I really didn't find it offensive. The one thing that does bother me somewhat is the print quality. Although I would rate it good, it's not excellent or even very good, it's just good. If I run a text doc through my three printers (I also have a Canon I860 photo printer) the HL-2140 will come in last, even at 1200 dpi. Despite the lower than expected print quality the value of this machine is still high. Considering the print quality, the high speed, the VERY low price, and hopefully lower ink cost, you will not be disappointed.

I bought this printer a month ago. It arrived on a timely manner. Installation is easy. It prints fast and with good quality. The only shortcoming is the noise when it starts.

Great product at a great price. This almost begs the question: When the time comes, why buy a drum? The price of the printer itself means it is more economical to simply buy another printer.

Had this machine for two weeks. No problems whatsoever. The price was great, and the delivery was timely. I am quite happy with my buy.com purchase.. (Yes, the printer ships without a USB cord.. Luckily I had one of them and I am using it without any problems.)

I bought this product at a sale price from Buy.com twenty days ago.I use it almost every day ever since and currently can't complain anything about it. The printer itself is very much compact.The set-up is quite easy.Warm up is super fast and printing performance is exquisite based on its inexpensive price.

I have been using this printer for about a month and I use it everyday. I love this printer. What a world of difference from my old inkjet. It's super fast and quiet and printing quality is excellent. No more expensive inkjet cartridges that are good for only 500 pages and shake the whole desk when they are operating. 1500 pages with laser for $3 less than inkjet. It's only good for black and white printing but I've uses it to print black and white photos and they came out great. Buy.com is super to deal with too. There's no reason not to buy this printer if you want to go laser.

Great printer to own. what more can you ask for? The ink is fairly cheap and since you don't have to constantly buy new ink like an inkjet, it will probably save you money in the end. Overall, i'm glad i made this purchase and will buy another one for my brother when the price goes down again.

Have a Brother HL-1440 that is over four years old and NEVER had one problem with it. So, when I needed more toner and anticipate needing a new drum soon, I decided instead to upgrade to the HL-2140. Although I just received it, I know that it is a product I can feel comfortable with. You can't beat the price of Buy.Com and I'm 100% satisfied with the great service of Buy.Com. (Ordered on Day 1 and received on Day 3). I expect to use Buy.Com for further purchases.

Probably the best budget laser printer around, small footprint, not to loud, prints great, quick warmup, easy setup. Much much better than the Samsung 2510 being dumped everywhere.

With the rebate and discount, this item was a steal. I had the 2040 for the past number of years and it finally started dying on me so I decided to upgrade to this model. It is more compact and more efficiently designed than the previous model and printing on things like post cards through the manual feed is a lot steadier and easier to use. Black and white color is excellent. My only desire is for this printer to also print color, but then it would be a bulkier machine and double the price easily. Happy with what I got.

We bought the HL-2140 after our Samsung ML-1740 drained its third cartridge in three years of light-duty home use (about 10 reams of paper). At $80 each for the Samsung cartridge, it was cheaper to buy a new printer with $34 cartridges. Print quality is equal to the Samsung, speed is comparible. The Brother does not seem as well constructed (thin plastic), but the choice was easy when we realized that the HL-2140 with a replacement cartridge was only a little more than the cartridge alone for the Samsung.
