| | Broken Bridges, directed by Steven Goldman, is a bittersweet story of former high school sweethearts Bo Price (Toby Keith) and Angela Delton (Kelly Preston) who return home to Tennessee after the deaths of their younger brothers forcing them to deal with the past and future. Keith plays a country music singer who has fallen from the spotlight and whose life changes after coming home, reuniting with his true love and meeting his 16-year old daughter Dixie (Lindsey Haun) for the first time. The soundtrack features music by Toby Keith, Lindsey Haun, Willie Nelson, BeBe Winans, Flynnville Train, Rushlow Harris and score music by Grammy Award winning producer Randy Scruggs.
| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. | | Composers: Randy Scruggs; Toby Keith. | | The soundtrack to Toby Keith's movie debut, which stars the singer as a faded country star trying to reconnect with his roots, blends the sentimentality of Keith's performance on the title track with the passion of Fred Eaglesmith's "I'm Thinking About You." Matraca Berg's accordion-laced "Along for the Ride" highlights the exhilaration of new love, while the traditional gospel song "Uncloudy Day" features the all-star trio of Keith, Bebe Winans, and Willie Nelson, and Flynnville Train's "High on the Mountain" is pure Southern-fried country. | | The soundtrack to Toby Keith's feature film debut Broken Bridges is a rather understated affair, particularly in comparison to the robust, rowdy White Trash with Money, released earlier in 2006. If White Trash found Keith taking some risks, Broken Bridges finds him playing it straight, whether he's singing sentimental tunes or kicking up some dirt on a handful of rockers. Those loose, fun rockers arrive at the end of the soundtrack to Broken Bridges, almost as an award for fans who have put up with the eminently tasteful folky country and gospel that comprises the rest of the record, and by the time they do arrive they are a relief; things have gotten so earnest that some party anthems, like "Play by All the Rules, Miss All the Fun," are sorely needed. That said, there's a certain understated charm to the earnestness of the rest of Broken Bridges and the fact that Keith has brought in such understated songwriters as Fred Eaglesmith and Matraca Berg for his big-screen debut illustrates that he's a more complicated figure than some may initially think. But even if it's in good taste, Broken Bridges is frequently pleasant but rather dull despite such lighter moments as Scotty Emerick's "What's Up with That"; its heart is in the right place, but it's rather forgettable. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine | Producer: Toby Keith; Randy Scruggs |
