| | Professional Reviews | FilmCritic.com 7 of 10 One of the more literate and substantial gay-themed movies to come along in a while, Boy Culture (based on the equally intriguing novel by Matthew Rettenmund), looks at issues of sex, love, and commitment through a unique lens: the eyes of a hustler...Shot in grainy DV over 19 days in a very cloudy Seattle, Boy Culture has a raw and real feel. As off-putting as X is, it's hard not to be fascinated by the unusual life he has crafted for himself. Magyar has fun playing this sex bomb who leaves broken hearts in his wake, and he's a great narrator, somewhat reminiscent of Christina Ricci in The Opposite of Sex. It's a neat trick to make an audience root for such an unpleasant guy. And fans of Logo's Noah's Arc series will be amazed by Stephens' performance. Wispy thin and effeminate as Noah, he's built and butch as Andrew. It's hard to believe he's the same person. Credit good acting and what must be an impressive workout routine. - Don Willmott Variety 8 of 10 A strong cast, formal visual style and cynical voiceover that propels the action help elevate this Seattle-set gay romp from the ranks of the stereotypical. Based on the novel by Matthew Rettenmund, Q. Allan Brocka's sophomore feature wryly recounts a tragicomic dance of displaced desire as three roommates circle each other warily, uncovering layers of denial, defensiveness and role-playing...Ultimately, what makes "Boy Culture" so likeable is its presumption of intelligence; no matter how idiotically a character behaves, helmer Brocka suggests a certain distance between how he acts and how he thinks. Ultimately, the characters' true affections for each other are realized less by sentiment than through intellectual epiphany...Amid pro tech credits, production design by Cecil Gentry, even at its campiest, possesses a cerebral quality. Tech credits are pro. - Ronnie Scheib
