The government's most wanted amnesiac super-spy returns in this thrilling third installment in the Jason Bourne franchise. THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM picks up where the THE BOURNE SUPREMACY left off, with Bourne once again racing around the globe, desperate to uncover the secrets of his identity. Having just lost his girlfriend and only companion, his search for answers is now fuelled by much more than his own self-preservation. The film kicks off with Bourne tracking down a British journalist (Paddy Considine) who he believes has valuable information about his past. He quickly discovers that the government conspiracy runs far deeper than he realized, and so begins a riveting, action-packed game of cat and mouse with the CIA. Bourne plows through the bad guys like a mini-tornado, and after some breathtaking fight sequences and several nail-biting car chases, he closes in on the truth in a climactic stand-off on the streets (and rooftops) of New York City. Joan Allen and David Strathairn are excellent as two battling CIA directors, and Julia Styles pops up for a small but important turn as Bourne's former government contact. Matt Damon continues to give Bourne the perfect mix of tough guy determination and sad-eyed desperation, and despite his physics-defying fists, he never comes off as the invincible super hero. Rather, the appeal of Bourne remains in his humanness--he feels pain, bloodies his knuckles, and mourns the loss of his lover. It's this emotional and physical vulnerability that keeps you on the edge of the seat, holding your breath for him. Well, that and the totally awesome fight scenes, of course.

Let's just say it now: Paul Greengrass should direct every action thriller. The world of movies would be better for it...His masterful direction of The Bourne Ultimatum (* * * * out of four) makes this third installment unequivocally the summer's best "threequel." It also is easily the best action thriller of the year...Directed and edited with virtuosity, it offers two hours of non-stop excitement with not only one but two of the most breathtaking, heart-racing vehicle chase sequences ever. Sure, it's a franchise, but it's one of the rare smart ones. And though it's a genre film, it transcends the limitations and expectations associated with espionage dramas, emerging as the quintessential contemporary spy saga...Damon is at his best, having grown further into the role. He is just as convincing as a nimble spy who guides a journalist past a labyrinthine set of stumbling blocks as he is at fending off a rival assassin...Forget those impressive chases you saw in Matrix 3 or Casino Royale--Greengrass' dazzling, adrenaline-surging pursuits rise above the rest. He has made two of the best recent films, his last being the captivating United 93. Wherever he takes his handheld camera next, audiences would be wise to follow. - Claudia Puig

...I enjoy the [Bourne] movies simply for what they are: skillful exercises in high-tech effects and stunt work, stringing together one preposterous chase after another, in a collection of world cities with Jason apparently piling up frequent-flier miles between them..."Ultimatum" is a tribute to Bourne's determination, his driving skills, his intelligence in out-thinking his masters and especially his good luck. No real person would be able to survive what happens to him in this movie, for the obvious reason that they would have been killed very early in "The Bourne Identity" (2002) and never have survived to make "The Bourne Supremacy" (2004). That Matt Damon can make this character more convincing than the Road Runner is a tribute to his talent and dedication. It's not often you find a character you care about even if you don't believe he could exist...The director, masterminding formidable effects and stunt teams, is Paul Greengrass ("United 93," "Bourne Supremacy"), and he not only creates (or seems to create) amazingly long takes but does it without calling attention to them. Whether they actually are unbroken stretches of film or are spliced together by invisible wipes, what counts is that they present such mind-blowing action that I forgot to keep track. - Roger Ebert
