| At age 18, the Southampton, England-based Craig David became the youngest British male ever to score a number 1 hit, when his debut solo single, "Fill Me In" entered the UK charts in the top spot in March of 2000. His second single, "7 Days", likewise entered the charts at number 1, as did his acclaimed debut album, Born To Do It, upon its summer 2000 issue. Now Born To Do It is set to be released in the U.S., where David has already began to reap critical kudos and public popularity. Billboard calls the album's first single, "Fill Me In," "The real deal, not to be missed," while praising Born To Do It for its "pop/R&B melodies that defy time." The album sees David breaking out of the UK's burgeoning R&B/garage scene by drawing on a variety of other musical genres--from latin to rock to jazz--to craft a uniquely personal style which transcends musical and geographical boundaries. To date, the album has sold nearly 5 million copies worldwide, including 1.5 million in the U.K. alone.

Craig David has the sense to combine his pop leanings with his R&B roots, and the result is an irresistible mix of the sensual, the danceable, and the just plain catchy that recalls a millennial version of '80s UK R&B pretender Terence Trent Darby. | | David's background as a London radio DJ serves him well--the mix of songs is seamless, gliding by as smoothly as a summer boat ride down the River Thames, and his vocal gymnastics are similarly aurally pleasing. Craig David is arguably the latest in a long line of British R&B performers who interpret the form at least as well as, if not better than, their US counterparts. | Producer: Mark Hill; Craig David; Mark Hill; Wayne Lawes; Artful Dodger; Ceri Evans | Engineer: Mark Hill; Goetz |
| | Artist Overview | | U.K. R&B singer-songwriter Craig David emerged in the late 1990s as the smooth, soulful voice on U.K. Garage act Artful Dodger's "Re-rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta)." Blending the beats of the emergent U.K. Garage scene with slick, commercial vocals, David swiftly crossed over into the mainstream. His first solo single, "Fill Me In," grabbed the U.K.'s number 1 spot in April 2000. Repeating the feat again with "7 Days," Craig found himself poised to garner healthy sales on both sides of the Atlantic with the release of his debut full-length, BORN TO DO IT. The releases that followed were strong, yet also displayed a more urban-oriented sound. |
