[Big] It's Bogart from action start to gun-blazing finish, with excellent support from Lauren Bacall and all others of the cast. Plenty of high-wire suspense and unexpected situations that call for nail-nibbling or chair-arm twisting...Highly recommended for fans who like their whodunits highly seasoned...

[Key] Bogart is always a pleasure to watch, and Key Largo is no exception, despite its rather overly dramatic -- yet simplistic -- plot structure involving a gangster (Robinson) who takes over a Florida hotel during a deadly hurricane. It ultimately pales next to other Bogart and Bacall work, though it's still a reasonably good watch that has stood up well over the last 50 years. - Christopher Null

[Have] The aspect that elevates To Have and Have Not, and the best reason to watch this movie, is the interaction between Bogart and Bacall. Not only is this the first movie they made together, but it is, in a sense, a cinematic record of their falling in love. Recently, Cameron Crowe marveled at how the blossoming on-set relationship between Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz enriched the romantic texture of Vanilla Sky. Yet, compared to what Bogart and Bacall display in To Have and Have Not, the Cruise/Cruz liaison is tepid...The chemistry is at its strongest and most unmistakable in To Have and Have Not. - James Berardinelli

[Dark] The performances live up to the legends who gave them, though as a "Bogey & Bacall" vehicle, it doesn't come close to classics like Key Largo and The Big Sleep. Bogart's eyes, behind a gauze-wrapped face, add a whole new depth to the definition of "soulful"...All the supporting actors are fantastic: Clifton Young is bug-eyed and frenetic, a speed-talking, more (yes, more) sociopathic 1947 version of The Sopranos' Ralphie. Bruce Bennett and Agnes Moorehead (best known to current generations as Endora, Tabitha's mother, on Betwitched) have palpable chemistry as the sidekicks and zing repartee back and forth. - Sarah Chauncey
