Notes & Personnel Info | | Personnel includes: Bob Marley, Lee Perry, Peter Tosh, Bunny Livingston. | | SUN IS SHINING is a trawl through Trojan's well-combed vaults that combines the 1969 SOUL REBELS album with various singles, B-sides, and outtakes from Marley's pre-Island label years. Notable cuts include the medley "All in One," which blends primitive yet immensely appealing versions of "Love and Affection," "Simmer Down," "Bend Down Low," "One Love," and several others into a seamless whole; "Brand New Second Hand," which features the characteristically macho vocal stylings of Peter Tosh; and a confident foray into gospel/R&B territory on "This Train." | | Like many Trojan Marley-related compilations, SUN IS SHINING is chiefly of interest because it displays the Wailers in the transitional years between '60s harmony reggae and their groundbreaking mid-'70s Island recordings. Early, Lee Perry-produced versions of "Duppy Conqueror," "Small Axe," "400 Years," and "Lively Up Yourself" are featured here. The cuts are heavier on group vocal harmonies than in their later incarnations (listen for the "Hallelujah Chorus" quote on the outro to "Jah Is Mighty") and performed in a stripped-down setting that those unfamiliar with Marley's early oeuvre will find at once familiar and refreshing. | Musical Guests | | Lee "Scratch" Perry | | Peter Tosh | | Bunny Livingston |
