Blues Story opens with the wonderful, lazy horns of Mamie Smith's "Crazy Blues" and ends on the edge of rock & roll with Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog." In between are dozens of classic old blues tracks, including Tommy Johnson's bright but desperate signature tune, "Canned Heat Blues," T-Bone Walker's "Call It Stormy Monday" (with its famous line, "The eagle flies on Friday"), Elmore James' "Dust My Broom," Jimmy Reed's "Big Boss Man" (with the equally famous line, "He's just tall, that's all"), and Louis Jordan's jump blues standard, "Caldonia." One of Skip James' finest performances is also here, "Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues," as well as Bukka White's autobiographical and driving "Aberdeen Mississippi Blues." It is extremely difficult to give the fabled story of the blues its fair due in just under 40 tracks, but this collection does a marvelous job, and functions as a varied and well-balanced history of one of America's most important musical styles. ~ Steve Leggett

5 of 5 Best Blues Album Ever!!!1 Thursday, October 16, 2003
A Listener from Los ANgeles, CA

The Blues is oldest most original and influential American art form. Born over a hundred years ago in the Mississippi Delta, telling the stories of the poor and oppressed with incredible soul and honesty. The Blues Story is the greatest compilation of the best blues artists of our time. This two disc set contains track such as Mamie Smith singing “Crazy Blues”, that is so powerful and soulful that I felt like I was in a smokey blues club down in New Orleans with Mamie right in front of me. Other tracks include Big Joe Turner singing the original, low down “Shake rattle and Roll”, B.B. King singing “Everyday I Have the Blues”, and my personal favorite, Ma Rainey singing the “Yonder Comes the Blues” in which you feel that the music is coming straight from her gut. I really and enjoyed this CD and feel that it is a must have for any blues fan and anyone who has an appreciation for music in general.
