| Song Listing | |
| Reminiscent of the classic blues album Folksinger by Muddy Waters, Blues Singer is pure blues from one of the most gifted living musicians. Buddy Guy takes this opportunity to interpret some classic blues songs from artists like John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Skip James and Jack Owens. Eric Clapton and B.B. King accompany Guy with guitar solos on the track "Crawlin' Kingsnake." Clapton is also featured on the track "Lucy Mae Blues." Blues Singer comes on the heels of Buddy's most critically acclaimed CD to date, Sweet Tea (2001).

From the minute this Mississippi native affects a falsetto on Skip James's "Hard Time Killing Floor," neck hairs remain standing on end for the better part of BLUES SINGER. | | The remainder of these dozen carefully selected tracks find the blues legend rifling through the canons of favorites like Robert Nighthawk (a loping "Anna Lee"), Willie Dixon (the brash "I Live the Life I Love"), and Johnny Shines (a spirited "Moanin' and Groanin'"). Eric Clapton joins in for a tasty take on Frankie Sims' "Lucy Mae Blues" and B.B. King makes three for an acoustic blues summit on John Lee Hooker's seminal "Crawlin' Kingsnake." Though far from the raucous outings fans have come to expect, this collection of acoustic blues is a creative success and yet another stellar addition to Guy's already impressive discography. | Producer: Dennis Herring | Engineer: Ed Cherney; Andy Hunt; Colby Devereux; Dawn Palladino; Jacquire King | Musical Guests | | B.B. | | Professional Reviews | | Uncut (11/03, p.107) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Guy sounds simply magnificent, whether he's high and haunting on 'Hard Time Killing Floor' or deep and sonorous on 'Crawlin' King Snake'..."Living Blues (11/03, p.69) - "...He doesn't need anyone's help to make this disc a masterpiece - he takes care of that on his own..." Rolling Stone 5 of 10 In 2001, producer dennis herring got an exceptional record out of Chicago blues survivor Buddy Guy by introducing him to the crude, inspired songs of Mississippi's Fat Possum posse. Unfortunately, this attempt to revamp the concept with an acoustic album of modestly obscure Delta classics abjures the novelty, power and vulgarity that put Herring's earlier brainstorm over the top. Guy is a strong singer and ace guitarist well suited to revive Son House and Frankie Lee Sims. The Eric Clapton and B.B. King cameos here are fine in theory -- as is the light rhythm section on some cuts and Guy's Skip James falsetto. But in the end this is a roots tribute done in by its own piety. - Robert Christgau
