 Editor's Note
In Guillermo del Toro's BLADE II, Wesley Snipes reprises his role as the part-human, part-vampire superhero based on the comic book character. Following a trail of blood that leads to Prague, Blade (aka the Daywalker) slays a legion of bloodsuckers in the search for his abducted mentor, Whistler (Kris Kristofferson). Soon Blade reluctantly joins forces with a band of skilled vampiric warriors called the Bloodpack to hunt down an even deadlier enemy--the monstrous Reapers, who prey on vampires and humans alike, infecting them with an incurable virus. In addition to battling these relentless new foes, Blade must deal with situations brought about by the Bloodpack's tenuous alliance --in particular, his attraction to the lovely Nyssa (Leonor Varela) and his rivalry with the brutish Reinhardt (Ron Perlman).A hyperkinetic motion picture, BLADE II literally explodes onto the screen with hi-tech weaponry and stunning special effects. The fight sequences, choreographed by Hong Kong superstar Donnie Yen (who plays Bloodpack member Snowman), are remarkably hard-hitting and elaborate. The film also improves on the entertaining original by adding a darker, more visceral tone that's fleshed out by del Toro's stylish and brilliantly grotesque visuals. Both frightening and thrilling, BLADE II is sure to astound both horror and action fans alike.

****The Movie**** Blade 2 is a very worthy sequel, better in many respects, and not quite as good in some ways also. What’s better? First of all, you get more action. And it’s not just quantity, it’s good quality and good variety. You get your crazy gunfights and swordfights, but you also get some unique motorcycle stuff and some creative martial arts. Many of the action scenes are very refreshing and more creative, and they’re all very stylish with great camera shots and special effects galore. The special effects are done much better in this movie, the effects of vampires turning into ash and burning up are really cool, and they do some crazy camera rotation tricks too. The only time the effects let me down was in this one swordfight scene where Blade and his opponent are both fully computer generated and they move and look so fake it seems straight out of a videogame. But it’s still better than the Blood God in the first movie. One shortcoming though is that in some ways they seemed to be trying too hard to take the action to a higher level and in some points it feels strained and contrived. In movies like this you’re always allowed a few B movie campy moments, or excessively over the top action, but Blade 2 did it perhaps a bit too much that it harmed the feel of the movie overall. But in the end the action is still far more enjoyable than not, just don’t take this movie too seriously. Also better is the look of the movie. The first Blade had a very good look to start with, but it had a fairly limited color palette, mostly blacks and blues. Blade 2 is still dark, but there’s much more reds and vivid colors mixed in with the darks to great effect. The contrast between the blacks and the colors really make the scenes come alive. You may notice this straight off when you see that the inside of Blade’s black trench now is a satin red. Also more enjoyable was Blade himself, he’s much more laidback in this movie and has actual personality. There are some pretty humorous parts, overall Snipes plays Blade a lot more candid. The plot I’d have to say is neat, but it’s a bit convoluted. The first movie was much more straightforward. There are times when you kinda question certain character’s motivations, and things just aren’t fully convincing. But hey, in a movie like this, plot is at most secondary haha. ****The Video**** This is a very good quality transfer, especially considering how dark the movie is. I read many reviews saying this movie was very gritty, which I translate as meaning grainy. But I was happy to find that there is no excessive grain. Picture is clean, details are good, colors are vivid, blacks are black, shadow detail is tight. There wasn’t any excessive edge enhancement. Are very nice transfer, but if you have a projection TV, not a good movie to watch in the day as there’s too much black and you won’t be able to see all the details. ****The Audio**** Well well, a DTS ES 6.1 mix, the only thing more you could ask for would be a DTS ES Discrete 6.1 mix. As it stands this is an excellent sound mix and the perfect type of DVD to show your system off with. From the pounding techno club beats to the explosive action scenes, your system will be put through a workout. All the action scenes feature extensive use of the surrounds, with plenty of sounds coming from the side or from behind, or panning around the soundstage. Very enjoyable to listen to. The D-norm is set to +4 on this movie so you probably won’t need to turn it up as loud as you’re used to. ****Extras**** This is a 2 disc set and the second disc is crammed with extras. The director is a self confessed DVD geek and he loves all the extras, so he but a big effort into creating a DVD that even he would be happy with. You get commentaries, all the behind the scenes stuff, deleted scenes, etc. More than enough stuff, and the director is a really funny guy too. All in all an excellent disc that you won’t regret adding to your collection. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Must Have DVD Sunday, August 18, 2002 A Viewer from Georgia
For those fans of the first installment of Blade, the sequel is not to be missed. The movie itself is wonderful, with plenty of plot twists, cool guns, and of course the beautiful Leonor Varella...Nonstop action from beginning to end. My only complaint with the movie was the fact that fight choreographer Donnie Yen's immense talents were marginalized tremendously in this movie, and his role in the movie, while true to his real personality, is simply not becoming of an actor and fighter of his talent. 4 of 5 Entertainment...It Is!!! Wednesday, August 14, 2002 A Viewer from Dallas, TX
If you're looking for a movie for entertainment, this is it. Definitely, on par with the Blade series. Better special effects and a more coherent story line, make this a movie to become a staple of any DVD collection. I can't wait for the DVD release. Was this review helpful?

Wesley Snipes is back as Blade and still just as bad! The action was continuous with a couple of twists and turns. I love Vamp movies so this was awesome. The bad guys were truly bad and good guys were . . . . well I won't say for fear that I'll ruin it for everyone. See this flick if you liked the first installment of Blade. The movie has the same feel as the first but has alot more action. Enjoy! Was this review helpful?
