An extraordinary expos by one of America's young radical journalists, this is the dark story of the rise of a powerful mercenary army, ranging from the blood-soaked streets of Fallujah to the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast to Washington, D.C., where Blackwater executives are hailed as heroes.

Annotation:
In this investigative report on the high-tech security firm known as Blackwater, military journalist Scott Taylor details the origins of the company founded by a former Navy Seal who inherited a billion-dollar fortune. Blackwater holds lucrative, and dangerous, contracts in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan, and their staff has been engaged in numerous firefights with the enemy. While its operations fall outside of military jurisdiction, Blackwater claims "Total Force" legal protection as a contractor in the war zone, and Scott explores the issue of whether they act beyond the scope of the law and without oversight. He also examines the role that Blackwater played in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, securing homes and businesses in wealthy areas, and sometimes engaging with civilians. He asks the old question of who will oversee the overseers, and whether this highly trained security firm poses a threat of its own. Jeremy Scahill was awarded a 2007 George Polk Award for BLACKWATER.

Praise
"Scahill's page-turning collection of intrigue and insight into the underworld of privatized warfare is well-researched, thoroughly documented and, as a result, extremely frightening." - Scott Taylor 03/24/2007

Chapter One

THE LITTLE PRINCE

THE STATELY mansion at 1057 South Shore Drive in Holland, Michigan, is about as far from Fallujah as one could imagine. The home where young Erik Prince, founder of Blackwater USA, grew up sits along the sleepy banks of Lake Macatawa, an inlet of Lake Michigan in the American Midwest. Trees shimmer along the edges of the driveway on a summer day; the sun glints peacefully off the lake. Occasionally, a car clips by or a boat motor starts, but otherwise the neighborhood is calm and quiet, the embodiment of affluent, postcard American society. Two middle-aged women power-walk past a man lazily riding his lawnmower. Other than that, the street is deserted. As they trot by, one of the women glances over to her companion, their sun visors almost colliding, and asks whether the Prince family still owns the mansion. The estate is well-known, the family more so. In Holland, Michigan, the Princes were indeed royalty

The most interesting book I've read lately. Jeremy Scahill is a courageous talented investigative journalist, and he was way ahead of the pack on this one. Apparently I don't listen to the shows whose hosts and guests smear the author, but I'll bet they're not proving him wrong. I used to be one of those conservatives who formed an instant opinion when someone was labeled "far left" or stuff like "hates their country" or "unpatriotic" was thrown in. But that doesn't work anymore. This book confirms what a lot of Americans suspect. There's some bad sh** going on out there. The US using a private mercenary army, with some of it's "contractors" recruited from Pinochet's murderers?? And they get paid $600. a day?? And are not accountable to US law, military law, or Iraqi law?? No wonder this book is on the NY Times Bestseller list!

5 of 5 If you love America, READ THIS BOOK! Wednesday, October 03, 2007

Don't believe the review smearing this book. This is a meticulously documented book about a very real threat to American democracy. Blackwater operates in concert with U.S. forces, but without having to bother with little things like the Uniform Code of Military Justice. You know, one of the cornerstones of our democracy and what has made us "the envy" of the rest of the free world. This week we see Blackwater back in the news, killing with impunity in Iraq. This book gives all the information on how it got to where it is today. It is a tough pill to swallow, but Blackwater is a yet another black eye for the US. More fallout from the lies that were told to get the U.S. to buy into the war. A war which it is increasingly clear is about one thing: making money. Blackwater is a prime example of how even death and destruction can be marketed and drive enormous profits for those deemed worthy by the Bush administration.

In the face of easily verifiable facts, right-wing reviewers resort to attacking the messenger. Unable to defend the debacle in Iraq, they are left to produce a straw-man argument against the author in hopes of distracting from the facts. Fact: there are more paid mercenaries than troops fighting in Iraq. Fact: Blackwater and their ilk profiteering in Iraq are neither controlled by the Uniform Code of Military Justice nor are they held accountable to US laws so they have zero accountability for their actions in Iraq. Fact: any draw-down or end to the fighting in Iraq would put Blackwater out of business (or at least make a sizable dent in their billion-dollar no-bid contracts) -- that's the same Blackwater that contributes heavily to the GOP. Read the book or any of numerous press articles on the topic. Verify the facts. Make up your own mind instead of just mouthing a partisan attack on the messenger. The book is well written and interesting. It is tragic to see how seriously the idealism and honor that the United States of America was founded on have suffered. It DOES matter how the US is viewed across the world. We cannot simply devolve into a playground bully making up our own rules and insisting any nation that opposes us is evil. Only the most myopic and short-sighted would think otherwise.

1 of 5 Wow Sunday, May 20, 2007
A Reader from G-rap, MI
If you want to read the biggest load of bulls*** then this is your book. He is as far left as you can be, and doesn't know anything about what Blackwater really is. It is sad to see someone hate their country and everything it stands for so much that he has to lie and ruin good people's lives, and their reputations. I would give this book a zero if i could, but I can't. My suggestion to this so called "author" is to try pulling your head out of your a** and learn how to research and write; because all you are giving us is a bunch of s***
