| | | Leave No Man Behind. Features: DVD, Widescreen, Dolby Digital (5.1), French, Dubbed & Subtitled, English, Subtitled From acclaimed director Ridley Scott and renowned producer Jerry Bruckheimer, based on actual events, Black Hawk Down is the heroic account of a group of elite U.S. soliders sent into Mogadishu, Somalia in 1993 as part of a U.N. peacekeeping operation. Their mission: to capture several top lieutenants of the Somali warlord, Mohammed Farrah Aidid, as part of a strategy to quell the civil war and famine that is ravaging the country. "Ridley Scott's uncompromising vision is awesome." David Ansen, Newsweek "A four star knockout." Mike Clark, USA Today
 Editor's Note
On October 3, 1993, Army Rangers and members of the elite Delta Force participated in a covert operation in Mogadishu, Somalia that went horribly wrong. Sent to abduct two lieutenants of a vicious Somali warlord, the soldiers found themselves surrounded by hostile militia. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down and many men lost their lives. Mark Bowden of the Philadelphia Inquirer told the story of the battle in his exhaustively researched, critically acclaimed book, BLACK HAWK DOWN, and filmmaker Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR) and screenwriter Ken Nolan have done an amazing job of bringing the dramatic story to the screen. Like Bowden's book, the film does not thoroughly examine the context of the conflict, but gives a detailed and intense blow-by-blow account of the fighting. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Josh Hartnett as a competent but nervous Ranger sergeant leading his first mission, Ewan McGregor as a "desk jockey" who excels when sent into combat, Eric Bana (THE INCREDIBLE HULK) as a cocky and enigmatic Delta, and Ron Eldard as a downed Black Hawk pilot. The violence of the film is brutal and nearly constant. Scott unflinchingly captures the chaos and mayhem of battle with tremendous visual finesse.

5 of 5 So Incredibly INTENSE!!! Monday, July 01, 2002 dgysegem from Glen Burnie, MD
Movie was a little slow to start, but once it gets started...WOW! A little graphic with the blood and guts at times, but overall, a great flick. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 One of the best war movies made Wednesday, June 26, 2002 scyankeefan from Hanahan, SC
I hope this movie shows the sacrifice and bravery these men have and had. This is the only, and I mean only, war movie that has emotionally drained me and really had that much effect on me after leaving the theater and sitting in the car heading home. The final scenes of the movie the Mogadishu Mile, I knew I couldn't take another 10 to 15 minutes of fighting scenes. It was incredible in the worst way. Also, only being 9 years ago, had an effect on me in that I was in college boozing it up while these men were fighting for their lives literally and figuratively. It's a shame the real cause of this tragedy was not named, but that's Hollywood. Was this review helpful?

Take a story based on historic fact, mix in good actors, good acting, and great visual effects. Won two academy awards best editing & sound and was astounding in the theater; but then release it on DVD in a wide screen format that is 1.78 not 1.38 of HDTV [bars at top and bottom of screen on HDTV requiring use of expansion feature to fill screen] An insult to how film should have been presented. Then, only have Dolby Digital 5.1 sound instead of the much better dynamic range DTS sound and mess that up. On high-end home theater with 5 channels and 1000-watt amplifier having a "wonder around the room" voice track is inexcusable. Sure they could have done DTS sound and true HDTV format option, but then it would have required a second DVD for all the extras included in one "dumbed down" DVD. To the marines who lived it and actors who portrayed it I salute you for a fine job! To the Hollywood Moguls who produced the DVD "where's my gun?”

This movie has the best action scenes since Saving Private Ryan and really depicts the true events well. The special effects are perfect and the acting is too. But if you don't like blood and guts don't see this movie cuz there are many scenes that are very gruesome. This movie makes you appreciate what the fighting men and women do for us everyday. Buy it today! Was this review helpful?

I'll make it simple: this is an incredible movie. It is brutal and very smart. Visually, it is gorgeous. The acting is solid, and I really appreciate the dialogue. Ridley Scott is a big name in Hollywood, and he and the other filmakers resisted the urge to drop in those irrelevant and inappropriate moments which come to trivialize the war-time experience.
"Black Hawk Down" may not be the best war film ever made, but it is well-worth admiring. At its best moments, it's poetic. I highly recommend it. Was this review helpful?

Sometimes a film comes along that effects your life in many ways. This was it for me. I've seen a few documentaries on this battle, and even reviews from the survivors and survivors families regarding the films integrity. Some of the minor workings were altered just a bit for movie script's sake. However everything was historically accurrate. This made me think twice about what people are really out there deffending us. We should never take these warriors for granted. Doing so would be a diservice to this country. And this film tells it in the perspective of the soldier, not the stars who portrayed them.
Some times it's not the war' it's the men fighting the war that should be honored. Was this review helpful?

The movie depicts the events that happened after the Marines pulled out of Somalia. It shows the Army Rangers valiant determination to rescue fallen comrades after their mission took a tragic turn for the worse. The combat scenes are realistic and draw you into the action with the Rangers. The visualization will leave you breathless and terrified. I highly recommend this movie, especially to those who have served. And it’s also recommended for those of you who are curious as to why we fight and do the things we do. It’s not for glory, not for recognition, or for gain, it’s for the person beside you and all your loved ones back home. Was this review helpful?

This movie depicts the true events of the Marines greatest failure in military history. The events leading up to the tragedy are very well told and the main scenes of the movie are extremely graphic in nature. I'm extremely disappointed that the movie isn't being released in the DTS format. This is one movie that could rival "Saving Private Ryan" in digital sound replication. Overall a great movie to watch and to own. Was this review helpful?
