One very vital manifestation of those vestiges is the presence of a number of soulful, gritty bluesmen including R.L. Burnside, Asie Payton, and T Model Ford. Nobody's fool, writer/director/star Arliss Howard helped compile a soundtrack for the film that relies heavily on the earthy, penetrating contributions of the aforementioned artists. More than local color, Burnside and company provide something of a sonic heartbeat for the film (in fact, R.L. appears onscreen). The BIG BAD LOVE soundtrack isn't limited to blues, though. Arliss's taste apparently walks hand in hand with his powers of persuasion, as he managed to entice Tom Waits to compose and perform two new songs (the rootsy "Long Way Home" and the poignant "Jayne's Blue Wish"). Arliss also coaxed two lovely instrumental pieces out of reclusive former Television guitarist Tom Verlaine (one from his '91 album WARM & COOL, and a new one with the Kronos Quartet). The commonality between all these artists is their pursuit of pure emotion, a calling they share with the film which their music so effectively accompanies. | Engineer: Chris Shepard; Andr?
