Horner's evocative score and Dion's single "Then You Look at Me" reflect the film's bittersweet tale of a robot's ambition to become human over the course of two centuries. Though it may not be as popular a soundtrack as Titanic, Bicentennial Man is a satisfying, appropriate album of film music. ~ Heather Phares | | An end title song sung by Celine Dion notwithstanding, TITANIC composer Horner's orchestral score for this Robin Williams vehicle (based on a story by sci-fi great Isaac Asimov) has very little in common with his Oscar-winning aquatic music. BICENTENNIAL MAN is more explicitly modernist (translation: an occasional dissonance can be heard), and the Celtic melodies are dispensed with, although the overall tone of the score is serenely romantic. | | Actually, this harks back to some of Horner's earlier music; as a film composer, he cut his teeth on sci-fi flicks like BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS and STAR TREK II, and you can hear elements of those earlier works here. Interestingly, the main title--"The Machine Age"--is the wittiest and least characteristic bit of the score, with deliberate echoes of avant-garde composer George Antheil's Jazz Age Twenties masterwork "Ballet Mechanique (by the '50s, of course, Antheil himself wound up in Hollywood doing movie scores). | Producer: James Horner; Simon Franglen; Simon Rhodes | Engineer: Simon Rhodes |
