Singer-songwriter Diane Birch took half her lifetime, and traveled across the globe, to get to America, where she literally found her voice and made her remarkable debut, Bible Belt. Though only in her mid-twenties, Birch likes to think of herself as an "old soul," and indeed there is a startling maturity in her singing and a veteran's self-assurance in her writing. Hook-driven songs like "Fools" and "Valentino" offer more than just instant gratification: they're like your new best friends ? you'll want to get together with them as frequently as possible. Birch mixes piano-playing virtuosity with easy-going soul, and she can strike an uplifting groove on even the most melancholy tune. Her work bears hints of Laura Nyro (when she was hanging out with LaBelle) and early 70's Karen Carpenter (when she was ruling the charts), while effortlessly incorporating New Orleans second-line rhythms, gospel fervor, doo-wop harmonies, country-blues guitar and classic AM radio-style melodies. Bible Belt was recorded in New York City and New Orleans with a formidable team of Grammy-winning producers: S-Curve Records founder Steve Greenberg, soul legend Betty Wright and Mike Mangini. Among the players accompanying Birch are guitarist Lenny Kaye of The Patti Smith Group, bassists Adam Blackstone from The Roots, and George Porter of The Meters, acclaimed drummers Stanton Moore of Galactic and Cindy Blackman of Lenny Kravitz fame, saxophonist-about-town Lenny Pickett, and trombonist Tom "Bones" Malone, along with veteran singer Eugene Pitt, lead vocalist of fabled Brooklyn vocal group, the Jive Five.

It's hard to imagine a more desirable item on a singer/songwriter's resume than growing up as the child of a traveling preacher, which is indeed Diane Birch's oft-repeated backstory. The most significant thing about Birch, though, is her love of late-'60s/early-'70s folk, pop, and soul, which comes through loud and clear on her debut album, BIBLE BELT. The singer/pianist's bell-clear voice tugs gently at your ear as her tunes echo the likes of Carole King, Elton John, and Carly Simon. The production team behind Joss Stone is at work here as well, and they know just how to make a roots-worshipping young woman sound totally contemporary.

Bio
Diane Birch

Since she was seven, Birch had been studying piano via the learn-by-ear Suzuki Method and had cultivated the ability to replicate a melody upon hearing it. As she explains, "Ever since I was a kid, I have been incredibly fortunate in that I could hear something and then just play it."

When she was old enough to live on her own, Birch moved to L.A., with the notion of becoming a film composer: To make ends meet, she quickly learned a standards repertoire and pursued work as pianist-for-hire, eventually landing regular gigs at the Beverly Hills Hotel and L'Orangerie. Prince once saw her play and invited her out to jam with him and his band at his home ? an invitation she duly accepted. Up until this point, Birch had always seen herself as a pianist and hadn't tried to sing until a friend cajoled her into taking a class. In order to have something to perform there, Birch wrote an original song, which her new classmates immediately loved. So she wrote another for the next class, then another after that; thus she became a genuine singer-songwriter.

Thanks to material she began to post on her MySpace page, Birch heard from a manager based in London and before long was able to relocate there, where she soon had both regular gigs and a major publishing deal.

5 of 5 Diane Birch- An Original Sunday, June 21, 2009
Oaklandfan from Longmont, CO
Diane Birch is a breath of fresh air. She is very soulful and charming. I get so tired of the over-produced, half naked, trendy music that is out there. She writes her own music, sings, and plays an instrument. What more could you ask for? She reminds me of Joni Mitchell a bit mixed with Nora Jones, and the like. Her worldly and life experiences definitely show through in all aspects of this album. I think there is a little something for everyone on this album. My favorite songs on the album would be Fire Escape and Fools. I hope to see more of this young lady!

5 of 5 This Album is an Instant Classic Thursday, June 18, 2009
Vanessa Druckman from Ridgewood, NJ
Diane Birch's voice is like liquid gold. Soulful yet powerful, this is the perfect album to cook with a glass of white wine, or to get romantic. Some albums have one or two good songs, but this is a special CD and you won't want to miss any songs.

4 of 5 Soothing, inspiring, and hauntingly beautiful!! Thursday, June 18, 2009
W Barker from Seattle, WA
Only in her mid-twenties, Diane Birch has a beautifully clear, mature voice that is sure to soothe and inspire at the same time. While slightly similar to Norah Jones in sound, Diane Birch has added her own special touch to her songs. Originally a pianist, this singer-songwriter is sure to become a favorite with her debut album Bible Belt, which is rapidly climbing in popularity (currently #30 on iTunes Top 100 Albums, #40 on Amazon in music). This album is great to play while in the car or working on the computer. It is equally as nice for home use, while cooking, cleaning, or just hanging out. This album would make great background music for a get-together over coffee or dinner party. While I've enjoyed listening to the entire album, after listening to the cd a few times, I've developed these favorites: Fools, Don't Wait Up and Choo Choo.

5 of 5 You will play rewind over and over again Wednesday, June 17, 2009
Ida McCarty from Chicago, IL
Listening to Diane Birch's, Bible Belt Cd is a winner. "Rewind" really makes you think about all of the things that you could have done differently, if you had been given the chance to push rewind on your life. It is really deep and moving. Her cd is reminiscent of Norah Jones, Diane Krall, and Janis Joplin. A combination of blues, jazz, and folk. You definitely have to give it a listen.

4 of 5 Great Sound Monday, June 15, 2009
SaphireEyes from San Antonio, Texas
I had never heard this artist before listening to this cd. I was pleasantly surprised. This album is a soulful, fresh sound great for all ages. I find it to be a mixture of Dianna Krall and Patsy Cline The lyrics are very meaningful and will touch your heart as they potently relate to true life experiences we have felt or been through at some point in our lives.

4 of 5 Wow Friday, June 12, 2009
Animalgal from USA
This is her first CD but you cannot tell. To me, she sounds like an old favorite! Diane wrote the music herself, and she writes like a pro. The music is very relatable and some of the songs are haunting. Her music stays with you for a long time, but in a good way! There are several ways to describe her music-smooth, soulful, easy listening, raw, stripped, earthy, simple, and unique. You can really feel her energy, and feel what she was thinking when she wrote her lyrics. Among other things, this CD would be perfect for a day at the beach with a good book. My favorite song is Ariel-it just stays with me! Her sound is similar to Carly Simon, but a modern version. I foresee a long and successful music career for Diane!

5 of 5 OLD SOUL Friday, June 12, 2009
oodles4u from venice,ca
Diane Birch sounds like an old favorite, with all the sparkle and magic of a breakthrough talent. People says she sounds like a combination of early Carole King, Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Nicks, with a little Joss Stone and Cat Power mixed in. Bible Belt is only her first record, but it’s one of the most accomplished albums you’ll hear all year. From the opening track “Fire Escape” to the closing “Magic View,” Diane’s stunning voice is mesmerizing. Written entirely by Diane, Bible Belt was recorded in New York City and New Orleans with an impressive team of Grammy-winning producers: S-Curve Records founder Steve Greenberg, soul legend Betty Wright and Mike Mangini, in their first project together since producing Joss Stone’s first albums.

4 of 5 A little bit of Everythin Thursday, June 04, 2009
mommysreview from Indiana
Diane Birch does have a little bit of Norah Jones in her voice along with a country and gospel sound to her music. It's so relaxing and soulful. The CD is great to play in the background while company is over or to relax by yourself in a hot bubblebath. I will listen to this CD over and over. I can't wait to see whats next for Diane.
