The lead single, "Bounce with Me," is the best of the bunch, a feel-good rap song that's refreshingly PG-rated. "Bow Wow (That's My Name)" is another clear highlight, an enjoyable song featuring Snoop Dogg. Also refreshingly PG-rated is "Ghetto Girls," a ballad with good intentions. It's questionable whether Lil Bow Wow wrote his own rhymes for Beware of Dog (one suspects not). All the same, there's no denying the charm and vocal dexterity of Lil Bow Wow, who proves himself genuinely talented, if not exactly a prodigy. He's pretty cute, too. ~ Jason Birchmeier | | It's hard to reconcile hip-hop with cuteness, but that's one of the operative concepts at work on the debut recording by adolescent rapper Lil Bow Wow, who lets us know on the opening cut "The Future" that he was "born in 1987." The 13-year-old rapper, whose voice had yet to change during the recording of BEWARE THE DOG, emulates the street-centered hard line of his hip-hop predecessors, but his producers are too responsible to let the lad utter profanity or espouse violent ideas. | | Instead, the subject matter is mostly innocent self-aggrandizement that almost harks back to '80s old school sounds. The beats behind Lil Bow Wow are never less than contemporary-sounding, though, and everyone from Snoop Dogg to R&B artists Xscape and Jagged Edge join in, the latter two adding pop hooks. BEWARE OF DOG works as a hip-hop album both for kids and for adults with a penchant for lines like "I might look cute, but it's the dog in me." | Producer: Jermaine Dupri | Engineer: Brian Frye; John Horesco IV; Bill Hermans; Carlton Lynn | Musical Guests | | Snoop Dogg | | R.O.C. | | Xscape | | Jagged Edge | | Da Brat | | Jermaine Dupri | | Big Duke |

| | Professional Reviews | | Q (5/01, p.114) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Bow Wow is skillfully presented as a coy but tough object of desire on the verge of manhood....the kid is quite a rapper....and this packs a real pop punch."NME (Magazine) (4/7/01, p.44) - 7 out of 10 - "...Everything here is short, sharp and efficient....Rarely has a kid in pop produced something they'll still be proud of when they're aged 40....He's so savvy it makes you fear for his soul..." |
