Notes & Personnel Info |  | A huge star in France, Venezuela's Yuri Buenaventura is a fabulous modern salsero who isn't afraid to inject a political edge into his music. Taking advantage of his Gallic popularity by singing in both French and Spanish, he's quite adaptable, as this collection shows, performing duets with Cuban rappers Los Orishas and also with French/Algerian rai singer Faudel, as well as covering an old Mano Negra song, "Mala Vida." That he can do such things and still keep a driving, rooted sound is a fine high-wire act, and one Buenaventura pulls off with aplomb. The label has cherry-picked the most upbeat and frantic of his music here, all 12 cuts guaranteed to get even a chair-bound listener sweating. This is some of the finest modern salsa around; add in the two videos the disc includes and you've got quite a bargain. ~ Chris Nickson |
