The opening number, a version of "Stardust" by Artie Shaw that is completely different from his standard studio edition (cut two years later), with an extraordinary chorus by Shaw, sets the tone for this release. Other highlights include a beguiling "Blueberry Hill" as performed by the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra with Bob Eberly on vocals, a pair of Duke Ellington delights ("Swamp Fire," "Tea for Two"), and Stan Kenton's hot version of "Baby Won't You Please Come Home." These transcriptions gave bands and soloists a chance to preserve some of the work that they did get around to putting down on record for commercial release, filling in lots of holes along the way -- the performances are first-rate all the way through, so even the casual listener will love with material, and the sound is excellent. The notes are nicely detailed as well. ~ Bruce Eder | Producer: Thomas Gramuglia; Thomas Gramuglia (Compilation) |
