JAMES: THE BEST OF is an excellent sampling of the late output of the band that was almost too happy for Manchester. Culled mostly from James's albums from the 1990s, the 18 songs here include the smash hit "Laid," and several other UK hits that were US sleepers, including "Come Home," "Sit Down," "She's a Star," and others. Sadly, JAMES: THE BEST OF provides only one example of the band's earlier work on Factory Records. Nevertheless, the compilation attests to the wonderful pop sensibility that characterized the James sound, as well as to the lyrical depth that helped the band develop the dedicated following that enabled its survival long after the Madchester scene had floundered. Led by the dramatic high register of Tim Booth and an arsenal of reflective, intellectual lyrics, the five-member group scored a string of hits on both sides of the Atlantic in the early-1990s, reaching an apex with the impish, yodel-happy "Laid," an MTV staple and huge modern rock hit. Booth also stepped outside James for a series of majestic compositions with Angelo Badalamenti. James proved durable, surviving a rumored split in the aughts to return with admirable pop vigor on 2008's HEY MA.
