Is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law? Is it like the hand of God hovering above? At least it is true that man has no control, even over his own will. In the castle town of Midland, a new King has come to power through treachery and violence. His demonic agents victimize the citizens, until one night when the black swordsman comes to destroy them. However, the true motive behind the man's unrelenting grudge against the king is buried in the past. Before the twilight of Midland, a young mercenary named Guts fights for his fortune on the front lines. There he meets Griffith, known for being charismatic, graceful and deadly. Griffith's mercenary company, the Band of the Hawk, is a powerful military force and the talk of elite political circles. Between the strength of Guts' anger and the subtelty of Griffith's ambition, the face of Midland will never be the same.

"...It's the best in-your-face action I've seen since Escaflowne."  Julie Davis, Animerica Magazine

Editor's Note

Set during a time that very much resembles Europe during the Middle Ages, BESERK is a story of revenge set in the castle town of Midland. Recently, the town has seen the rise of a wicked king, who uses demonic minions to control and victimize his subjects. However, when a lone soldier enters the town calling himself the Black Swordsman and armed to the teeth, many sense that the king's days of unchecked oppression are over. Soon, the Black Swordsman is plying his trade by hunting down the king's evil servants, giving no quarter, and preparing to exact his vengeance on the king. Contains episodes 1-5.

5 of 5 Surprisingly good! Monday, August 05, 2002
Kojiro from Rochester, NY

I didn't have the highest expectations for this series, however I was very surprised. The first episide is a little lame, typical low budget anime - dark hero, crazy monster boss, blood and action. But after that first episode, it all changes. The story is amazingly in-depth and grabbed my attention and won't let go. Now I can't wait for the next episodes. And even more surprising is the English dubbing is excellent. Excellent voice acting. Also, don't forget to watch the outakes, they are side-splitting!

5 of 5 The Greatest Anime Of All Time Tuesday, May 14, 2002
shonobi from Atlanta, GA
That's a pretty big title to wear, but, in my opinion Berserk is a masterpiece of Japanese anime. It's been a long time since i've seen a series where i couldn't wait to get to the next episode. The characters are well developed, and the relationships between them are well flushed out as well. This anime has a great story, and excellent action as well. But, be aware, I really wouldn't recommend this for anyone under the age of 18. The world of Berserk very much like the Medival age that it's set in. Dark and war torn. You will see blood freely flowing in this anime. However, this is a true anime fans dream come true. A spellbinding story!!! A must-have for your anime DVD collection!
