5 of 5 Great Radar Detector, Long installation Time Wednesday, June 24, 2009 Mike from Cherry Hill, NJ
This radar dectector is an excellent purchase! I researched ALL of the remote radar detectors on the market and this unit was best in its class for the price category and LOWEST price on THIS site. I was replacing a Whistler remote 3850, which although has a longer warranty, was inferior in the electronics used in the unit. I went through TWO completely NEW Whistler units and kept running into an issue that whenever the temperature outside rose aboe 85 F, the whistler would start to malfunction with random error messages. I believe that the proxcimity of the whistler in the range of 10-12 inches from the radiator in my STS was heating the circuits and causing problems. No such issue with the Bel mounted in the same area.
This unit AUTO dims to be readable in direct sunlight and dims enough to be very soothing on the eyes when it is dark outside without user intervention. It has OUTSTANDING radar detection and has picked up police radar on bends in the road with excellent distance!
The detector front laser mount and rear laser mount took about 8 hours to install into the vehicle as the laser mounts need to be placed very close to the front license plate and the rear laser mounts directly ON the rear license plate. Having a Cadillac with all of the lighting systems installed within the trunk lid required quite a bit of disassembly in order to run the wire from the rear plate to the central brain of the system, which mounts inside the car behind the dash. You have to run a wire for the front radar detector and a second wire for the front laser detector and then run it through the front engine firewall and into the brain as well. If you are not proficient with electronics and cars, I would highly suggest having a professional installer put this unit in your car. I installed it myself becuase I have over 25 years of automobile experience and have yet to find an installer that does as thorough a job as I do.
Overall: Beautiful design for lighting, volume level on high will over ride the Loudest of stereo systems and the detection capabilites are only trumped by the K40, which is about $1500.00 more without installation. This unit gives MORE than sufficient time to take your foot off of the gas and in my opinion, if a detector goes off for a trap too far down the road, you will start thinking you are receiving false detections and ignore what is being displayed!
Buy it and enjoy! Was this review helpful?
