4 of 5 Works for Garmin Geko GPS - but blue screens if la Friday, July 02, 2004
    ThoroughTester from Long Beach, CA
Bought for use w/Garmin Geko 201 GPS & new laptop (WinXPPro) that lacks serial port. Install straight-forward: install driver from CD (click "Continue Anyway" on warning about "Windows Logo testing"), reboot, plug in cable/adaptor & use Add New Hardware Wizard to install software automatically. Shows up in Device Manager under Ports (COM & LPT) as "Belkin F5U109 Serial Port (COM5)." W/Geko Interface set to NMEA & MS Streets & Trips 2004 set to use GPS on COM5, got realtime lat/lon, & w/Geko Interface set to "Garmin" & National Geographic Topo! V2.7.7 set to Garmin ETrex (Geko is not listed) on COM5 w/baud 9600, I can upload/download waypoints/routes & get realtime lat/lon. Warning: blue screen of death occurs if laptop wakes from hibernate while cable plugged in! WinXP on recovery prompted to get new driver at Belkin site, but I didn't bother--just take care to not let it hibernate while using it. Also, if cable/GPS plugged in when booting, WinXP will think GPS is a Serial Mouse, so plug in GPS AFTER WinXP is booted up (this is not the fault of the Belkin cable). Adaptor has indicator lights for Link, TX, RX -- handy when troubleshooting!

5 of 5 Does exactly what you want! Tuesday, January 08, 2002
    Rog from elkridge, md
I'd been looking all over for a serial converter for my laptop which only has USB. This product is small (actually sleeker than it appears in the buy.com picture), lightweight and does exactly what you need it to do. Although the product packaging suggests that it's only for interfacing your PDA to your computer, it does work for any* serial device. After installing the device's driver, it interfaced seemlessly with my GPS receiver. (*according to Belkin, it creates a virtual port for your serial device, some devices may not support virtual ports) My only suggestion is that while installing the driver, you must specify the path to CD-ROM... Window's installation wizard doesn't find the driver on its own. No biggie... the product works great!
