Inevitably, attention clusters around a handful of singers -- King Pleasure, Eddie Jefferson, Annie Ross, Jon Hendricks, Irv Taylor, and Joe Carroll -- but there are also cameo appearances by the irrepressible Dizzy Gillespie ("She's Gone Again"), a young Betty Carter (with King Pleasure), and Blossom Dearie (also with Pleasure). A number of original landmarks are here: Pleasure's "I'm in the Mood for Love" and "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid," and Ross' still-freshly minted "Twisted." Contrary to the upbeat vocalese image, one is struck here by the quantity of despairing lyrics sung to happy music; Jefferson seems especially prone to depression. The disc does jump outside its period to take in some fine Hendricks remakes of "Moanin'" and "Along Came Betty" with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers; without looking at the dates, you can guess the era from Cedar Walton's swinging electric piano on "Moanin'." For collectors, eight of the 23 tracks are new to CD, all tracks from a Prestige LP anthology of the same name; no unreleased goodies, though. Anyone who wants to evoke the feeling of the jazz ethos of the '50s will probably flip over this reissue. ~ Richard S. Ginell | Producer: Eric Miller |
