It takes a while to get to the cheery stuff, though; the first ray of optimism (King Floyd's 1970 funk-pop hit "Groove Me") is preceded by eleven songs documenting unrequited love, impassioned pleas, and love affairs doomed from the start. | | Roland Gift of Fine Young Cannibals kicks things off with the soulful "That's How Strong My Love Is," reminiscent of mid-'70s Van Morrison. The Me Decade is well-represented here--Billy Paul's "Me And Mrs. Jones," Kiss' "Beth" and Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" are all prominently featured. The Afghan Whigs cover Barry White's "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Babe," shifting the song to a minor key and giving it an ominous, threatening tone. Satchel, Pete Droge and Chris Isaak contribute original compositions, as does Ween, whose doleful ballad "I'll Miss You" is mind-bogglingly and unlike anything the band has ever released. |
