| | | The double Academy Award winner saluting the "battered bastards of Bastogne"! Features: DVD December 1944. One of the civilian victims of the Battle of Bastogne scrounges through garbage, hoping to find a scrap of food. "I don't even see those things," a war-numbed GI says. "I want to remember them!" his buddy says. Bastogne veteran Robert Pirosh remembers with his Oscar-winning screenplay for Battleground, a gripping tale of the 101st Airborne troops resisting Hitler's fierce, final counteroffensive. A superb ensemble cast directed by William A. Wellman (The Story Of GI Joe) plays the boy-next-door types who were the soldiers of liberty, including James Whitmore as a bantam rooster of a sarge and Van Johnson as a wisecracking PFC (as in "Praying for civilian"). Rugged and unsparing, Battleground--1949's #2 box-office hit and the recipient of a total six Oscar nominations (including Best Picture)--makes sure we'll all remember. "...Wellman gives expert attention to the human side of war." The Motion Picture Guide "...tightly conceived...character drama." VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever
 Editor's Note
"Dedicated to the battered bastards of Bastogne," this dramatic historic film directed by William Wellman tells the story of a U.S. Army division in the European theater near the end of World War II. In a last-ditch effort to turn the tide of the war, the Germans launch a final attack that became known as the Battle of the Bulge. George Murphy, who portrays Private Ernest J. "Pop" Stazak, leads a terrific cast that also includes John Hodiak, Ricardo Montalban, and James Whitmore. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards and won two: one for its tight, unpredictable screenplay and one for its evocative black-and-white cinematography.
