| | | Babar explains how yoga was introduced to Celesteville and how he and Queen Celeste keep fit doing yoga on their many travels. Includes a pull-out poster showing Babar in yoga poses. Annotation: The popular elephant Babar, a leading character in the classic children's series, now stars in a fun and informative yoga book-for elephants! After discovering that wooly mammoths were the first to practice yoga, Babar decides it's high time for the inhabitants of his kingdom, Celesteville, to learn how to stretch and relax. Taking the reader through 15 yoga poses, step-by-step instruction is provided with Babar and company leading the way. With easy-to-follow directions, children will be able to enjoy basic yoga poses with a fun twist. Babar and Celeste also model their skills as they travel across the world, pausing to settle into Downward-Facing Dog at the Louvre, along with a variety of poses at other exotic locations. Breathing exercises, one of the key beneficial aspects of yoga practice, are also included. With vivid watercolors in the signature de Brunhoff style.
| PraisePublishers Weekly "Though these instructions include playful touches (at one point Babar notes, 'I find wrapping my trunk around my feet helps me stretch'), aspiring yoga practitioners can easily follow de Brunhoff's directives and imitate the movements in his signature watercolor renderings of the earnest narrator." 08/12/2002New York Times "This may sound like a stretch, so to speak, for a cartoon figure with a trunk. But Babar makes it work. And he stars in one of the nicest gift books of the season." - Janet Maslin 12/12/2002 |
| Author Bio| Laurent De Brunhoff | | Laurent de Brunhoff is the son of French author and illustrator Jean de Brunhoff, the creator of Babar the elephant. Babar originally appeared in bedtime stories that Madame de Brunhoff shared with her children. Jean de Brunhoff died of tuberculosis in 1937; Laurent was 12 at the time, and considered the beloved elephant a member of the family. In 1945 he began to create and publish his own stories about Babar. |
