Printz Award winner Walter Dan Myers and Caldecott Honor artist Christopher Myers join forces to deliver a gripping and brutally honest novel about friendship, loss, and loyalty, told in a sketchbook/comic-book style.

Annotation:
This intense, action-filled story examines the difficulty of two friends struggling to remain close as one turns towards the world of drug-dealing and violence. Fifteen-year-old Jesse, a burgeoning young artist, and 17-year-old Rise have been best friends, pretty much brothers, since they were little. Lately, Jesse feels that Rise is changing, and he's worried about the choices his friend is making. When Rise starts talking about dealing cocaine, Jesse has no idea what to do, and uses his art as an outlet. Will the tumultuous, frightening world of drugs and violence separate them forever? By Walter Dean Myers, author of the award-winning young adult novel MONSTER. Accompanied by B&W artwork by his son, award-winning children's illustrator Christopher Myers. A 2005 National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature.

Praise
Kirkus
"The innovative illustrated novel format is effective...Though the story is starkly realistic, there is always hope in the gifts of Jesse the artist and C.J. the musician, of schools and churches and of caring parents." 07/01/2005

Author Bio
Walter Dean Myers
Walter Dean Myers's mother died when he was young, leaving his father to raise eight children alone. When he was three, Walter was taken in by a nearby couple, Herbert and Florence Dean, who moved with him to Harlem, New York. A speech impediment contributed to his unhappy time in school, although he did love to read and write. When he was 16 he won a prize in an essay contest, which encouraged him to continue his writing although he eventually dropped out of school and joined the Army. Afterward, he held a series of jobs before becoming a full-time writer. His first book for children, WHERE DOES THE DAY GO?, was published in 1969 after it won a competition sponsored by the Council on Interracial Books for Children. Myers has been awarded the Newbery Honor, the Coretta Scott King Award, and the Margaret A. Edwards Award for his contributions to young adult literature.
