 Editor's Note
AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY is the first in the comic series starring this bodacious 1960s spy played by the hilarious Mike Myers. Decked out in the gaudiest mod attire--ruffled shirts, tight-fitting candy-colored suits, horn-rimmed glasses, and prosthetic teeth--Austin Powers is anything but subtle. His near-constant exclamations of "Groovy, Baby," accompanied an uncandid flash of his flirtatious smile, only add to his wonderfully exaggerated hipster persona. Plotwise, Austin Powers and his enemy Dr. Evil (also played by Myers) awake from 30 years of frozen, cryogenic sleep to find themselves in the year 1997. A conniving Dr. Evil plots a reign of terror and mass destruction, but finds that his ideas and methods are a bit out of date. Our hero encounters a similar dilemma, realizing that he is definitely behind the times. A series of well-meaning though bumbling efforts to thwart the insidious Dr. Evil keep Austin Powers and his devastatingly beautiful partner Vanessa Kensington (Elizabeth Hurley) hard at work as they travel from London to Las Vegas. With this tongue-in-cheek send-up of James Bond spy films and 1960s cliches, director Jay Roach compliments Myers' over-the-top performance with a lighthearted soundtrack, fun photography, and amusingly retro sets.

"Do I make you horny, baby, yeah, do I?" Well, not exactly, Austin, but you did make me laugh, especially in this first film of the Austin Powers trilogy, where all the gags that became overly familiar in the sequels were new and fresh. Mike Myers was able to mine plenty of comic gold by spoofing all the corny conventions of a Roger Moore-era James Bond flick while overlaying the silliness of London's swinging '60s and blending in the kind of sex jokes that slay the junior high demographic....read the full review |

What is best is the puppy-dog earnestness and enthusiasm that Myers brings to his role. - Roger Ebert James Berardinelli's ReelViews 7 of 10 Mike Myers is wonderful in his dual role, getting a chance to parody both hero and villain in the same film. Not only that, but as Powers, Myers effects one of the most intentionally outrageous British accents ever heard. Elizabeth Hurley is fine as the sidekick/love interest, although certain outfits she wears will focus attention on attributes other than her comic timing. The New York Times 7 of 10 Austin Powers, like its hero, has a delightfully misplaced faith in its own relevance. This comedy can be sophomoric, but at some moments it's also unexpectedly sharp. And the film's singlemindedness is so dauntless and just plain nutty that it's hard to resist. - Janet Maslin

5 of 5 Tuesday, February 08, 2000 William from Lexington, South Carolina
I thought that this was a very funny movie, it deserved 3, maybe 4 stars. I just thought that some of the jokes in it were hilarious. Maybe a little too mature for a kid my age? I liked how the jokes in the movie would always keep you on the edge of your seat just waiting for Mike Myers to say something funny. This movie deserved a lot of credit. It is a MUST SEE! 3 of 5 Uneven spy spoof but some inspired comedic moments Thursday, July 22, 1999 Scott McCollum from Austin, Texas
'Austin Powers' is not only a tongue-in-cheek spoof of 60s James Bond movies like 'Dr. No' and 'From Russia With Love,' it even spoofs the Bond contemporary spoofs like 'Casino Royale' and 'Our Man Flynt.' Can someone actually get away with making a spoof of a spoof?
The writer and star of 'Austin Powers,' Mike Myers tries. Saturday Night Live alum Myers has a penchant for creating and giving life to memorable buffoons on both the TV and silver screen. In 'Austin Powers,' he actually creates two - British spy/fashion photographer Austin Powers and his arch nemesis Dr. Evil. The performances by Myers are very funny, but these performances alone cannot carry an entire movie. Goofy toilet humor, overplayed sexual innuendo, B-list actor cameos and just plain silliness tarnish an otherwise sterling cinematic concept. Although geared for a teen audience (PG-13 rating), some of the humor is a little too over the top for pre-teens - Parents beware of this and it's sequel (which is much more vulgar). The DVD menus, extra scenes and director's commentary are well done and the A/V quality is top notch. For fans of Myers and his goofy humor, 'Austin Powers' is a must buy. Others can just go over to a Myers fan's house and save a few bucks. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Shaggadelic Groovy Austin Powers Movie Review Baby Sunday, July 11, 1999 jstead2 from Kingsport, TN
I think Austin Powers is a great movie no matter what some critics say. Most of the people who don't like it, or can't laugh at that movie don't have a sense of humor. It's my favorite movie. It may not be the best movie but who cares. It's really funny. It's a lot better than Titanic. That's for sure. Was this review helpful?

This movie keeps you on the edge of your seat to see what jokes or funny referance is going to come out of Mike Myres mouth next.

5 of 5 Austin and me, this sort of thing is my bag, baby. Wednesday, June 23, 1999 A Viewer from USA
This movie is one of the funniest I’ve seen in long while. Mike Myers has created the perfect characters to spoof spy movies. Dr. Evil’s character was a stroke of creative genius. The movie actually gets funnier and funnier every time I watch it. It is truly the fine wine of movies, it gets better with age. Or maybe it’s like hair! It just grows on you.
