On January 20th 2006 musical legend Barbara Cook took the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House for what was an unprecedented event. The Met was presenting, for the first time in its 128 years, a female non-classical singer. Ms Cook had as her special guests four-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald and the multi-platinum recording artist Josh Groban. The evening which required no advertising was sold out of its 3700 seats within five days just by word-of-mouth from the legions of loyal Barbara Cook fans, proving her star power has withstood the test of time.

With a voice The New York Times calls "better than ever" Barbara Cook charms the standing room only venue with classics from Cy Coleman, Dorothy Fields, Stephen Sondheim and George Gershwin along with a couple of songs by new talents she adamantly believes in - John Bucchino and Amanda McBroom.

In addition to chilling duets with Josh Groban and Audra McDonald, Barbara stepped back to allow each artist the chance to add a magical solo performance to this truly remarkable event.

Features "Move On" Barbara's stunning duet with Josh Groban, which lifted the audience out of their seats!

Non-classical concerts are a rarity at New York's Metropolitan Opera, and the venerable company had never hosted a female pop singer prior to inviting Barbara Cook (an old friend and supporter) to appear on January 20, 2006. The 3,700-seat house sold out without an advertisement being placed. DRG, Cook's longtime label, naturally recorded the show, which is more notable as an event than a performance, even though the singer is in typically strong voice. Of course, that voice is itself notable, coming from a 78-year-old woman, since it betrays very few signs of age. Working with a quintet led by pianist Eric Stern (the replacement for Wally Harper, who died in October 2004), Cook turns in a set full of familiar material, most of it drawn from vintage Broadway shows. On "Them There Eyes," Marcus Rojas joins her on tuba as she breaks out a kazoo. More seriously, she introduces guest Audra McDonald, who has the pipes to play the Met, although she humbly says she'd never have gotten there without the invitation from Cook. Faux-classical singer Josh Groban makes no such admission after Cook's generous introduction, even though it would be far more appropriate for him. He turns in a rote but harmless version of Stephen Sondheim's "Not While I'm Around," better fare than he's accustomed to, and wisely stays out of Cook's way during Sondheim's "Move On." Then the star of the show closes things out. The album is more a souvenir and a victory lap than a major addition to Cook's catalog, but welcome nonetheless. ~ William Ruhlmann

Bio
Barbara Cook

Barbara Cook's silvery soprano, purity of tone, and warm presence have delighted audiences around the world for more than 50 years. Considered "Broadway's favorite ingenue" during the heyday of the Broadway musical, Miss Cook then launched a second career as a concert and cabaret artist soaring from one professional peak to another.

Whether on the stages of major international venues throughout the world or in the intimate setting of New York's Cafe Carlyle, Barbara Cook's popularity continues to thrive - as evidenced by her 1997 birthday concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Albert Hall in London, a succession of triumphant returns to Carnegie Hall where she made a legendary solo concert debut in 1975 , and an ever-growing mantle of honors including the Tony, Grammy, Drama Desk and New York Drama Critics Circle Awards, her citation as a Living New York Landmark and her induction into the Theatre Hall of Fame.

Ms. Cook's studio recordings include eight original cast albums; two Ben Bagley albums of songs by Jerome Kern and George Gershwin; an album entitled Songs of Perfect Propriety, featuring poems by Dorothy Parker set to music by Seymour Barab; and As Of Today on the Columbia label. Ms. Cook can also be heard as the voice of Thumbelina's mother in the Warner Bros. animated film Thumbelina, with music by Barry Manilow, now available on videocassette. Her most recent DRG recordings also include Close as Pages in a Book, featuring the lyrics of Dorothy Fields; Barbara Cook: Live from London; Oscar Winners: The Lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein; All I Ask of You and The Champion Season: A Salute to Gower Champion and the Grammy nominated Count Your Blessings, a collection of traditional Christmas songs.
