4.7 of 5 Crazy performance in a decently small machine! 1/18/2010
tom from Las Vegas, NV
I apologize for the long review but I am amazed by this laptop, and would recommend it to anyone, which my dad purchased one because he liked mine so much. Even though there are some flaws the Pros way more than make up for them. I would recommend, however, that you upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit, not 32 bit. I am a student and so I got windows 7 Professional for $30, but it is worth it even if you have to pay full price.
Also i know that the windows experience index rating isnt the best and doesnt really tell you how your computer will perform but i will give you mine anyway. *after i installed windows 7 pro 64 bit*
Processor: 6.4
Memory: 6.4
Graphics (aero): 6.6
Gaming Graphics: 6.6
hard drive: 5.9
This is all out of 7.9
For a laptop of this size its very high-end!
Pros:
-Super fast processor, 2.8 GHz. Great for Multitasking. I upgraded from a 1.8 GHz AMD X2, and the performance upgrade is very noticeable. Boot up is about 30 seconds, programs open crazy fast, even high end gaming like Crysis and Crysis Warhead (on high settings) dont slow it down.
- The Graphics card is amazing. While there are others that are faster, this 1GB card has definitely held its own. I am upgrading from an ancient nvidia 6150 and games that I wouldn't think about playing run like a beast on this machine. There isnt anything yet that I have thrown at it and it hasnt been able to play on high settings.
- 4GB of ram. The more ram the better. I have read that the mother board will allow up to 8GB but 4GB has been more than sufficient. Its only ddr2, but i am not complaining.
- 5 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, eSata
- The computer stays amazingly cool. I dont know how they have rigged this much computer into such a small machine and yet it is still cool. The fan is almost silent unless you are running a game and at full speed the fan is still quieter than my old HP and it gets warm only near the exhaust vents.
- most of the installed asus software has been cool, like the fingerprint reader, smart login which recognizes your face and logs you in. Other programs arent as useful to me but others may find them useful. They are easy to uninstall so its really no problem.
- all the drivers for windows 7 worked flawlessly.
- N wireless, great range, fast. I have a 300 Mb/s connection to my router (which is N as well)
Cons: There arent many and I have either gotten around most of them or forgotten them
- vista 32, the N81vp-d2 has a 64 bit windows 7 Home Premium already installed, this comes with(for some crazy reason) vista 32 home premium, its not the end of the world, but because of limits that 32 bit OS's have they cant utilize all 4GB of ram. the first thing i did was replace it 64 bit windows 7 Professional. I would recommend getting a 64 bit win 7. It does come with a free upgrade to get a win 7 home premium from Asus but that would only be for a 32 bit version.
- I guess i wouldve liked a Bluray player instead of dvd, but i dont even have any blurays so for me that was not a deal killer, for others maybe.
- the mouse buttons are noisy, but i use a wireless mouse. if you use your computer where you need to be quiet, this could be a slight problem.
- its a 14 inch screen but its not much smaller than my old 15.4 inch HP DV6000 laptop (actually they look identical), the asus is a little smaller though. I dont mind the size as i am amazed as to how they fit everything into a machine this size, and keep it cool.
- the control button is located where the function button should be. i researched this laptop for about a year and i heard that this had been fixed, but apparently i got one of the models where it hadnt. i thought that i would hate it, but i quickly got over it.
Overall: like i said i would recommend this laptop to anyone! it has been nothing but awesome (even with a few minor flaws). Asus gives you a 2 year warranty and an awesome laptop. not much beats it for the price, size and performance.
*BUY.com was great too!

5 of 5 Tons of performance for the size 8/9/2009
from Albany NY
Pros: elegant looking design and color scheme, well built, great cpu and graphics, very good cooling as laptop will almost never get hot or even warm, webcam, included mouse and bag.
Cons: the webcam login utility is not the best but other than that the machine is solid.
I'm surprised there aren't any reviews for this laptop. I've owned it for a few days now and I'm extremely pleased with its design and performance. The machine feels very durable and appears very elegant overall. The 14" display looks great and makes the dimensions of the laptop a bit smaller than my 15.4". It's not as thin and light as I had thought but its very sleek for the power that's jammed inside. Performance wise this laptop is on par with medium to high end desktops. The highlight of this machine is the CPU and graphics card. I was surprised with the gaming performance as it runs all the newest games very smoothly at the highest settings. Crysis runs perfectly at medium to high settings. Overall this laptop is a great deal and outperforms most of the laptops at higher prices.
