3 of 5 This is not 1.7Ghz Monday, June 30, 2008 recstudios88@yahoo.com from Bloomington, IL
I guess it makes a good sense owning an eee pc as a 2nd, 3rd pc. This is my 6th. The portability is excellent.
At first I was debating in between a 15" dual core (Full laptop, specs not important, small enough for what I need plus lot more.) But the ee pc is quite attractive for it size smaller few inches here and few inches there. Then, what sold me was this eee pc with speed of 1.7Ghz and I think I can live without the other bells & whistles.
I purchased this eee pc as in advertised a 1.7Ghz, 12G ssd & XP home installed. All of the specs sound acceptable and I made the purchase. After Ive installed Office XP and few others (quite a minimal set up, this pc is mainly for word processing) Ive noticed that it is pretty slow and in compare with my 5 year old sons 900mhz Dell desktop. Went in to the system and realized that it is indeed a 900mhz cpu. At this point It is a little late on my side because Ive already made a lot of adaptation to this unit & lots other accessories was purchased at the time. Im kind of stuck.
Lately, the low memory msg been popping up a lot.....I've already installed my other softwares in my bigger size SSD still happening Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 Amazing little machine. I love it. But, some issue Tuesday, June 03, 2008 Pete from Northwest US
First, I agree with the other reviewer that the way it is configured is basically unusable if you install service packs. It takes some playing around to straighten this out -- and actually I haven't completed the straightning-out yet. So this hurts the ease-of-use, in that it will throw a lot of people off when they first get the thing, and will result in a lot of disappointment.
It's solvable, there's plenty of space on the other Flash drive even for bloated windows, but it either needs to be re-installed from scratch on the larger 8G partition, or else, something large, like the StarSuite package (nice that it is included, though) needs to be moved.
But the machine is just amazing. I have an HP 17" laptop for "power use" but actually I think I'll use this 2-pound wonder a lot more. Keyboard is small but usable. Of course if you're stationary, you can plug in a USB Keyboard and mouse, and even a monitor if you want. The touchpad is wonderful and has multi-finger tricks for scrolling, menu pop-ups, etc.
My keyboard pops loose in one corner, and the touchpad left click button seems a bit sticky. So, I'm a bit concerned about build finish quality, but these seem pretty minor cause I'm going to keep this sucker. However, this plus the Windows config mess make me give this unit less than a perfect score.
Unless you really want Windows, I now think I'd opt for the Linux version instead, and would solve the "disk full" problem with the currently-shipping config. With the Linux version, you actually get a larger Flash drive on that one -- ironic, since it's Windows that's the space hog. But I guess this is how they made the price the same for both models. And, also why I gave it a "4" on value instead of "5" -- when the little ones started at $299, it was pretty amazing. This one is almost twice that, so it's no longer in the same market -- but it is obviously a much more capable machine. And, by the way, the 9" screen is wonderful, sharp, clear, bright, all you could ask for (in the space allowed.) Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Small and cool Sunday, June 01, 2008 A Customer from Hoboken,NJ
I've had my new eee for 2 weeks now and I am very happy with it. I use it to browse the web, skype my friends with video, and watch avi videos. The keyboard is a little tight but I got to used to it quickly (I'm writing this review on my eee). The touch pad is awesome with it's array of multi-finger functions like 2 finger scrolling.
For the money this is a great pc. I would not use it to replace my desktop but for what it does you get a great value that is hard to beat right now. Was this review helpful? |
