4 of 5 A really ultra-portable PC Tuesday, November 11, 2008
Jersey guy from Jersey City, NJ
This model has the smallest dimensions of netbooks in this price category. It's easy to carry around town, at home, and in your carry-on luggage. The touch pad allows special functions like using two fingers for scrolling and zooming in and out. The double speakers provide loud and clear sound. However because of its small size some features are compromised. Words are small on the screen. Luckily with Firefox it's easy to zoom in and out. When typing it's easy to touch the touch pad and send the cursor to outside your typing area. The C drive is only 4GB. After loading SP3, Norton Anti-virus, and Microsoft Office, it's almost 85% full. Over that point you cannot defragment it. I have to install other software on the D drive or SD card. Then strange things happened. In My Computer on double-clicking a drive it opens the File Options screen to ask me what to open it with. With subfolders, it opens a Search Window instead of opening the folder. It also won't allow me to save the 'Show hidden files & folder' option. The right side ALT key does not work. This is not a fast computer, but is good to have as a second computer, but I would recommend one with a 10 in. screen if size is not your first priority.

5 of 5 works great Tuesday, September 02, 2008
A Customer from Rockville, MD
I reinstalled XP using nLite (http://www.i64x.com/eeexp.php) to remove all of the drivers, which cut the install size by about 800MB. Then I was able to get Office 2007 to fit on the main SSD with about 800MB left.

5 of 5 Most Excellent Monday, August 25, 2008
Albert from San Diego, CA
This is an incredibly useful item. It is incredibly small, but powerful enough to handle any documentation that might need to be done. I can fit it inside my workbook, and it is ready to go anywhere. Much smaller than most laptops, it does not require an extra hand to carry it. I am able to ready and even send my documents while mobile, and transfer my information easily when I get back to my office. I would recommend this or a similar item to anyone who has a document heavy job or who is attending school. The level of convienience is incredibly high, the price is low, and it fills any needs that it could be applied to. Keep in mind, this is a very lightweight machine, electronically speaking. It does not have much integral storage, so don't try to use it for much beyond documentation. It has a fairly weak CPU that will easily handle document applications, but not certain other programs. I have written some finance programs which easily work on mine, but anything more complicated than a database will probably bog the unit down. If a laptop is needed or desired (gaming, development, high-end accounting software, etc), then this is not the machine for you. As a mobile documentation and communications machine, this is a most excellent choice.

5 of 5 Very good travel PC Thursday, August 07, 2008
Max Davies from Orlando, FL
I am very happy with my PC 900. It is a very well designed, lightweight, travel-PC that slips easily into my carry-on case and takes no effort to use. It isn't perfect: the touch-pad isn't good and I use a small USB mouse instead; the small solid-state disk has been needlessly partitioned in the Windows version and I had problems making enough space to install XP Service Pack 3 onto the C drive. But overall it is a pretty little machine with a fine, bright screen that runs XP better than my pricey notebook runs Vista. The wireless card works especially well and I have been able to log onto public and private networks without problem. The keyboard is cramped, but the keys are responsive and perfectly adequate for surfing and lightweight emailing. The micro SD flash-card slot is a nice addition.

5 of 5 Great small laptop. Sunday, August 03, 2008
Fred C. from Bangor, PA
Before I ordered this computer, I read some of the reviews. I was concerned about the negative reviews, but still ordered it. When it arrived and I started using it, I was amazed. I am so glad that I received it. It is so easy to take with you, by being so light. It connects to the internet almost instantly when I boot it up. It is fast loading, even with Windows XP. I really don't have any complaints about it. I am looking forward to many years of use. Thanks Asus for making such a handy computer.

3 of 5 This is not 1.7Ghz Monday, June 30, 2008
recstudios88 from Bloomington, IL
I guess it makes a good sense owning an eee pc as a 2nd, 3rd pc. This is my 6th. The portability is excellent. At first I was debating in between a 15" dual core (Full laptop, specs not important, small enough for what I need plus lot more.) But the ee pc is quite attractive for it size smaller few inches here and few inches there. Then, what sold me was this eee pc with speed of 1.7Ghz and I think I can live without the other bells & whistles. I purchased this eee pc as in advertised a 1.7Ghz, 12G ssd & XP home installed. All of the specs sound acceptable and I made the purchase. After I’ve installed Office XP and few others (quite a minimal set up, this pc is mainly for word processing) I’ve noticed that it is pretty slow and in compare with my 5 year old son’s 900mhz Dell desktop. Went in to the system and realized that it is indeed a 900mhz cpu. At this point It is a little late on my side because I’ve already made a lot of adaptation to this unit & lots other accessories was purchased at the time. I’m kind of stuck. Lately, the low memory msg been popping up a lot.....I've already installed my other softwares in my bigger size SSD still happening

5 of 5 Asus EEEPC 900 - Windows XP version Sunday, June 15, 2008
A Customer from Schenectady, NY
This is a great little machine, providing that you are willing to trade the features and hard drive capacity of a regular-sized laptop for extreme portability and light weight. It's ideal for someone who travels a lot and is primarily interested in Internet browsing, e-mail access, word processing and other basic Office-type applications. The display is outstanding and the processor and Wi-Fi connectivity respond as quickly as most users will ever need. The smaller keyboard takes a few minutes of getting used to, but it's fully functional and usable. Microsoft Works, Star Suite 8 (Microsoft Office compatable), Windows Live Mail and Skype were pre-installed on my Windows XP version. After testing several Internet browsers, I found that Firefox offers the best combination of speed and overall performance with this machine. The main challenge is the lack of hard drive space. However, with some careful management this can be compensated for. You will need to store your photos, videos, larger documents, etc. on an SD card (the machine has a built-in reader) or flash drive. Use a low footprint antivirus and spyware removal software. I found that Avast and Spyware Terminator (both are available for free) work well. Take the time to fully understand the EEEPC 900 before you purchase it. If you are willing to trade extreme portability and light weight for the features and storage capacity of a regular laptop, you will love it. If not, you might be very disappointed.

5 of 5 Small, light to carry. keyboard can be better Saturday, June 07, 2008
K. Leung from Houston, TX
I love my toy, eee pc900. It's very portable, and the pearl white color is very refreshing for lady users. I find its Wifi modem has good range and sensitive. Although I bought the EEE pc900 w/ xp windows version, I reinstall its xp operating system after 3 days. Asus put full xp os into its 4G, I had less than 1G for future MS service pack updates. Oh, the 12G storage space they advertised is 4G on board SSD and soldered 8G SD. The XP OS must be on the 4G part. I have to reinstall my own XP nlited version CD w/ asus provided xp license. If new users interested in getting EEE pc and want to trim down your XP os size, can Google "Asus eee nlited XP" for more details. It has been over 1 week. So far so good. I paid $550 w/free shipping to buy.com in the 3rd week of May, 2008. Received the package via FedEx Ground 5 business days later.

4 of 5 Amazing little machine. I love it. But, some issue Tuesday, June 03, 2008
Pete from Northwest US
First, I agree with the other reviewer that the way it is configured is basically unusable if you install service packs. It takes some playing around to straighten this out -- and actually I haven't completed the straightning-out yet. So this hurts the ease-of-use, in that it will throw a lot of people off when they first get the thing, and will result in a lot of disappointment. It's solvable, there's plenty of space on the other Flash drive even for bloated windows, but it either needs to be re-installed from scratch on the larger 8G partition, or else, something large, like the StarSuite package (nice that it is included, though) needs to be moved. But the machine is just amazing. I have an HP 17" laptop for "power use" but actually I think I'll use this 2-pound wonder a lot more. Keyboard is small but usable. Of course if you're stationary, you can plug in a USB Keyboard and mouse, and even a monitor if you want. The touchpad is wonderful and has multi-finger tricks for scrolling, menu pop-ups, etc. My keyboard pops loose in one corner, and the touchpad left click button seems a bit sticky. So, I'm a bit concerned about build finish quality, but these seem pretty minor cause I'm going to keep this sucker. However, this plus the Windows config mess make me give this unit less than a perfect score. Unless you really want Windows, I now think I'd opt for the Linux version instead, and would solve the "disk full" problem with the currently-shipping config. With the Linux version, you actually get a larger Flash drive on that one -- ironic, since it's Windows that's the space hog. But I guess this is how they made the price the same for both models. And, also why I gave it a "4" on value instead of "5" -- when the little ones started at $299, it was pretty amazing. This one is almost twice that, so it's no longer in the same market -- but it is obviously a much more capable machine. And, by the way, the 9" screen is wonderful, sharp, clear, bright, all you could ask for (in the space allowed.)

5 of 5 Small and cool Sunday, June 01, 2008
A Customer from Hoboken,NJ
I've had my new eee for 2 weeks now and I am very happy with it. I use it to browse the web, skype my friends with video, and watch avi videos. The keyboard is a little tight but I got to used to it quickly (I'm writing this review on my eee). The touch pad is awesome with it's array of multi-finger functions like 2 finger scrolling. For the money this is a great pc. I would not use it to replace my desktop but for what it does you get a great value that is hard to beat right now.

1 of 5 Disappointed Monday, May 26, 2008
A Customer from Broomfield, CO
The 12G HD is misleading (wish the 'review' was available before I bought). It is a 4G + 8G SSD. The OS is installed on the 4G drive. When I updated to service pack 3, it ran out of hard disk space. It has been a big struggle to get service pack 3 removed since the install failed. Still haven't gotten service pack 3 removed yet. No returns!!! Well built. Wireless works great. Keyboard is small.
