We purchased one of these EEE PC 1000 netbooks for work to see how they would work out for traveling employees. I am a computer professional with Linux experience, but I have to say that ASUS has done a great job making Linux easy to use for novice and advanced users alike. This netbook is lightweight and works well for most tasks. StarOffice did a good job of reading and creating documents (MS Office formats) and everything worked well, even wireless. We typically pay twice as much for a full blown notebook computer so I am impressed with the cost and value of this product. This may be our new standard for mobile users who need the basics. The SSD is really 8G (where the Linux is installed) and 32G. I switched the BIOS to boot from the 32G and installed XP Pro. To save the SSD, I run without a swap file after boosting RAM to 2G. The pre-installed Linux was just too limiting for my tastes. Performance with XP is ok but not like lightening. I'm still tweaking the configuration. Overall the machine is now just what I wanted. It boots quickly and does just what I need in a package small and light enough to carry anywhere with a screen that is large enough to be useful. Was this review helpful?

The Linux preloaded version is great after a few tweaks. I wasn't a fan of the Xandros "easy mode" so I opened up the advanced mode, which enables a desktop environment. Battery life is stellar, and ease of use is alright, you need to be comfortable with tweaking if you want more functionality. Was this review helpful?
