5 of 5 Great and useful... Wednesday, February 25, 2009 A Customer from Memphis, TN
Asus Eee Videophone makes it easy to communicate using skype. I have one, my friend have one. We can just use it like a regular telephone, except, with video capability.
The battery last for 20 minutes with wireless, thus, it is good to move around the house. The Wifi working great..
I wish that many other product like this.. Was this review helpful?

From its 1964 debut at the NY Worlds Fair and the 1968 movie Space Odyssey, the video phone or AT&T Picturephone has been a piece of science fiction - until now.
Do we need to watch the person to whom we're talking? Is there enough value to justify the complications?
Yes. Asus and Skype have accomplished a small miracle. Consisting of a self-contained web cam / speaker phone / computer, the AiGuru delivers what it promises. Yes, it's too big and the battery life is too short, plus it has several small quirks that keep it from qualifying as a smashing success. But it is the first of its kind, a vanguard, and I predict it won't be the last. Like the original IBM PC with its puny 8086 4.7 MHz processor, the AiGuru simply shows what can be done down the road.
These comments aren't meant to encourage you to stay on the sidelines waiting for Version 3.1. It works well enough that, budget permitting, you should untether from the PC-based Skype and embrace a totally new implementation of the familiar Skype.
It works fine as an Internet phone, and really well as a videophone. There are a number of things I wish Asus had done differently, but overall it's a milestone accomplishment.
Video quality isn't as good as my Logitech Quick Cam pro 5000, but it's not bad. The sound quality is good, especially from the small but effective speaker. Operating the video phone is simple, because it utilizes the same Skype interface you use on your PC. The wireless capability offers flexibility.
I had no issues connecting hardwired - it worked immediately. There was a little problem connecting wirelessly, but once I found the MAC address in the Advanced section and keyed the name and address into my Netgear wireless router, I connected quickly and solidly (from power Off).
The size of the unit is off-putting, but this is Ver. 1, not 11. It's the size of a sheet of letter paper in portrait orientation, but 0.5-in shorter. Very large, but not huge.
The 7-in screen is adequate/acceptable. The picture quality (via wireless) was very good. My out-going image was a little grainy but acceptable, according to the receiving person. The connections were solid, both when operating video as well as audio only.
I can envision this technology being crammed into a future release of an iPhone. Currently the battery life is abysmal (18 minutes on a fully charged battery) and the size approaches gargantuan, but the unit is good enough to clearly demonstrate fabulous potential.
I've only had the unit a few hours, and maybe there's something I simply can't put up with, but right now I intend to live with its shortcomings. 4.5 stars, because it's the first of its kind. Down the road a year or two, probably 3 stars tops. (Asus, you need better beta testers - call me sometime.) Was this review helpful?
