With swinging, contrapuntal cuts such as "The Cylinder," "Condorde," and "The Golden Striker," leader John Lewis's original Bach-and-blues conception is well-represented here. Of course, he couldn't have done it without the sheer improvisational genius of vibraphonist Milton Jackson nor the precisely calibrated accompaniment of bassist Percy Heath and, especially, drummer Connie Kay, one of the most underrated players in the history of the music. Other highlights are "Django," Lewis's mournful tribute to the great Belgian guitarist, and a forward-looking version of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman." | | This excellent double LP gives listeners a fine overview of The Modern Jazz Quartet's many recordings for the Atlantic label during a nine-year period. There are 15 selections taken from 13 different albums with the highpoints including "Bags' Groove" (with Sonny Rollins), "Lonely Woman," "Django," "Sketch (For Double Quartet)" (with The Beaux Arts String Quartet), "Bluesology" and "Concorde." Although a good set for beginners, it is better to try to acquire the complete albums of The MJQ instead since they recorded many other rewarding performances for Atlantic not on this two-fer. ~ Scott Yanow | Producer: Nesuhi Ertegun; Nesuhi Ertegun |
