| | | | "Long ago the Lord of the Sun sent the spark of life to earth..." (from the first line) An expression of the universal myth of the hero-quest, this beautiful story also portrays the Indian reverence for the source of life: the Solar Fire. Vibrant full-color illustrations capture the boldness and color of Pueblo art. A Caldecott Medal Book. Annotation: A picture book retelling of a Pueblo Indian myth. A boy whose father is the Lord of the Sun sets forth to meet his father. In order to travel to the sun, the boy has himself transformed into an arrow. However, upon reaching the sun and transforming back into his human body, the boy must endure a series of tests to prove his true identity. Colorful gouache and ink illustrations accompany the text. Winner of the 1975 Caldecott Medal.
