Editor's Note

The war abroad rages on, and the struggles on the homefront continue in the sophomore season of ARMY WIVES, a dramatic series about a group of women on a South Carolina military base. Kim Delaney (NYPD BLUE) returns as Claudia Joy, a mother still grieving the loss of her teen daughter in a bombing incident. In order to cope with her personal tragedy, Claudia Joy turns to her (also troubled) friends for strength: bartender Roxy (Sally Pressman), Army brat Denise (Catherine Bell, JAG), and ex-cop Pamela (Brigid Brannagh). Variety 5 of 10
There's a fine line between tribute and exploitation, between mining contemporary territory for drama and using the troops shipped off to Iraq as emotional packaging for a primetime soap. FX tiptoed along that edge without toppling over in the laudable if too-close-to-the-bone "Over There," and now Lifetime seizes on the war with considerably less ambition in "Army Wives" -- a stereotypical sudser that wants to be "From Here to Eternity" but feels like "All My Children: Military Edition"...Clearly, there's fertile material in the toll military life can exact on relationships, but as constructed, "Army Wives" too often feels like a hollow dramatic device -- burdened with been-there, heard-that dialogue like "How long before everything feels normal again?," which elicits the answer "It never does"...The not-quite-saving grace comes from the earnest performances, with series pros Delaney and Bell supported by the vivacious Pressman and angst-ridden Brannagh. That said, there are still some wince-inducing moments, including a third-episode sequence in which the women sip wine and discuss nicknames for their vaginas...At a certain point, the soapy qualities could kick in and bring these characters to life, but as it stands, "Army Wives" feels as empty as expressing "Support the troops" sentiments on a bumper sticker. - Brian Lowry

Chicago Tribune 7 of 10
"Army Wives" (9 p.m. Sunday, Lifetime) is a risky proposition for cable's Lifetime network, which until now has been best known for perky-heroine telemovies, syndicated reruns and not-very-good original series such as "Lovespring International" and "Strong Medicine."...So the channel is to be commended for not only raising its game with "Army Wives," but also for taking on the timely topic of war, albeit in a somewhat indirect manner. Iraq is barely mentioned, and current events are merely glimpsed on the TV screens of the characters at the fictional Army base on "Army Wives," but the effects of war on the home front are unmistakable and are dealt with in a surprisingly straightforward manner...The series follows four wives of Army men, and one husband of a female officer, as they navigate the stressful terrain of married life and the rigors of being wedded to a member of the armed forces. This is Lifetime, so there are soapy elements -- surrogate babies, plots that hinge on idiotic decisions and some clunky dialogue -- but the series doesn't shy away from topics such as physical abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder and infidelity. Still, this series doesn't portray the spouses as victims, but as the essential glue that holds the Army together...Still, these women are worth spending time with, if only to see how they manage staying married under such difficult conditions (Roxy, after all, married her husband only a few days after meeting him). "Army Wives" is by no means a perfect show, but there's a lot of potential material in the lives of these women (and this man). If the level of the writing rises to match the abilities of this cast, "Army Wives" could become a strangely compelling hybrid -- a watchable wartime soap. - Maureen Ryan

Television addicts love their wives. Rich ones preferably, desperate especially. Why this is the case depends on whom you ask...Guys, at least the ones who care enough to weigh in, find TV wives sexy, particularly ones like Eva Longoria. You know, wives who don't have dishpan hands and wear La Perla lingerie just because it's Tuesday. Wives who don't exist in nature...As for those of us who either are, were, might someday become or don't have any desire to be wives, it's all in what we expect from each one...Something like USA Network's "The Starter Wife," which also premiered this week (and was reviewed here Thursday) offers a little escapist glamour with beachfront properties and au pairs and all that smooth jazz...It would be a precise match for summertime if it weren't so flimsy; still, it has its place. As long as you don't hold high expectations, you can have fun with it...Otherwise, it fails the marital contract between show and viewer because it's neither real enough nor outrageously unreal. A worthwhile TV wife is either a sister in arms or the bitch on wheels we wish we were on a hellish day, but could never be -- and when a show nails one concept of wife or the other, it's a keeper. - Melanie McFarland
